Collins' council term expires on Dec. 31. The Municipal Republican
Committee has 15 days from Collins' resignation to submit to the
council the names of three candidates to replace him. Because Collins
is a Republican his appointed successor must also be a Republican.
Collins, 57, of Cloverdale Avenue, has been charged with four counts
of aggravated sexual assault and two counts of child endangerment
involving two former female students, who were 13 and 15 at the time,
according to Monmouth County Prosecutor John Kaye.

Longtime Borough Councilman John J. Collins is resigning his seat
effective Friday amid charges that he had sexual relationships with
two teens, both former students of the middle school where he teaches.
