Court dismisses suit to bar use of military fort
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit dismissed a lawsuit by
the American Civil Liberties Union to stop the Defense Department from
allowing the Boy Scouts of America to hold its National Jamboree every
four years at Fort A.P. Hill in Fredericksburg, Va.
The ACLU, suing on behalf of individual named taxpayers, had argued
allowing the Boy Scouts to hold the event on public property is an
unconstitutional establishment of religion, because the organization's
membership is limited to those who believe in God.
The ACLU points out the Boy Scouts require members to swear an oath to
"do my duty to God and my country."
The court ruled Wednesday, however, the ACLU did not show standing to
bring the lawsuit.
Peter Ferrara, general counsel of the American Civil Rights Union
explained the ACLU could complain about the policy to Congress or the
president, but it "had no business bringing a lawsuit over it and
asking the courts to step in."

I'm a bit baffled. How are the "this is a matter for Congress and the
President" folks somehow better than the "this is a matter for the
courts" folks? Wasn't this an issue of the appropriate forum, not the
merits of the ACLU's argument?

The good guys? The ones that discriminate on the basis of religion (No
Atheists Allowed In Our Clubhouse)? The ones who would throw out a 16-
year-old eagle scout if the kid begins to realize he's gay and doesn't
lie about it?
Sounds distinctly un-American to me. What do you have against fairness
and equality?
I'm sure, J Young, that if you had lived in the recent past, the "good
guys" you would be rooting for would be:
- The ones that want to keep the black kids out of "our" schools
- The ones who want to stop women from voting
- The ones who support "Gentlemen's Agreement" (no Jews allowed)
housing sales
Maybe they're even the ones that you're rooting for today.

Surely you jest. The good guys apparently lost. The ACLU exists to ensure
civil liberties to all. They are not a tool for the feared liberal class.
They will fight for repulitards too, if their civil liberties are being
stomped upon.
Why do you fear the ACLU? Perhaps because they DO tend to defend mostly
liberal cases. Why is that, do you think? Maybe because the right is the
political party that spends most of its time opressing the rights of anyone
who doesn't agree with them? Ya think, Iben? No, I don't think you do.
