Object: Boys and Girls Ranch Attacked by Filthy Atheists
By Blake Nicholson, Associated Press

BISMARCK - The nation's largest group of atheists and agnostics is
suing North Dakota officials, saying public money is being used to
religiously "indoctrinate" young people at the Dakota Boys and Girls
Ranch.
The Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation filed the lawsuit
in federal court in Bismarck on Tuesday against Lisa Bjergaard,
director of juvenile services for the state Department of Corrections
and Rehabilitation, and Daniel Richter, director of Ward County Social
Services. The lawsuit lists the plaintiffs as Dorothy Manley of
Mandan, and Ken and Judy Mischka of Valley City.
The ranch's Web site says it has been affiliated with two Lutheran
groups, the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod and the Evangelical
Lutheran Church in America, in providing services to troubled young
people, with facilities in Minot, Fargo and Bismarck. The lawsuit
alleges that referrals are funded by taxpayer money, and that the
ranch "attempts to modify behavior by directing children to find faith
in the Lord Jesus Christ."
"The Dakota Boys & Girls Ranch provides services to children in the
context of an explicitly Christian community, including post-release
mentoring services, which are publicly funded with taxpayer
appropriations," the lawsuit says.
It asks a judge to declare a violation of the constitutional
separation of church and state, and to order the government to stop
sending children or money to the ranch.
Bjergaard said Tuesday that she had not seen the lawsuit and declined
comment. Richter did not immediately return a telephone call. Carol
Olson, executive director of the state Human Services Department, also
declined comment, saying she had not seen the lawsuit.
Boys and Girls Ranch officials could not immediately be reached after
business hours Tuesday to provide details on the organization's
funding structure.
The Freedom From Religion Foundation opposes President Bush's Office
of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives, saying its program singles
out faith-based organizations to the exclusion of other groups. The
U.S. Supreme Court is deciding whether the group has legal standing to
sue over the matter.
Dan Barker, a foundation spokesman, said the outcome of the Supreme
Court case will not affect the North Dakota lawsuit since it deals
with state and not federal money. However, he said he would not be
surprised if the group's standing was challenged in the state case, as
well.
Barker said the North Dakota case is being filed in federal court
because it raises constitutional questions.
He said the foundation gets complaints around the country of
violations of the separation of church and state, and has filed 10
other court challenges of the faith-based initiative.

what if it were going towards indoctrinating children into islam, or
mormonism, or scientology? would you still support it?

Why, moron? Yours is not the only religion in the US. And millions of
us don't even partake in a religion. Like it or not, we are all part of
the public, and in all fairness, public money should not be used in favor
of one group over others - unless you like courtroom drama, that is. The
Constitution of the USA contains laws that prevent this kind of
favoritism. Are you trying to tell us you are so un-American that you
don't know the law of your land?

No. There would be legal aliens to fill the gap.
When did "illegal" become something to be ignored?
If 15 million illegals are deported that opens up 15 million jobs for

Sure we would - but farm laborers and busboys would be paid at least
minimum wage. Wages rise to the level necessary to hire as many
people as the employer wants to hire - it's a basic law of economics.
No one gives up 100% of his profits to avoid losing 10% of his
profits.

Right... but those farms would now have to pay a minimum wage that i
think we can both agree would be higher than what most illegals are
getting now. Or, the farms would have to hire a lot less people to do
the work. Which means considerably less production, I should think.
Realistically, to keep the production humming and keep filling his
orders for 1,000 heads of lettuce per week (gotta supply the
clients/buyers with what they need), he'll have to keep the same number
of laborors (or a bit less) and pay them this new wage. and,
justifiably, the farmer will raise the price of the lettuce he is
selling to cover the new increased production cost. The increase would
get passed on down the line. And a very real result is that the
families depending on 99-cent grocery store lettuce and other vegetables
wouldn't be able to afford the 'true cost' of growing those vegetables
legally... and lettuce/vegatables/everything else increases in price...
or thats how i see it going anyways...

Which would be a LOT less than the increased price due to the increase
in oil prices, and the increase in taxes brought about by 4 years of
war.

They still buy the same amount of $3.50/gallon gas as they bought of
$1.90/gallon gas. In fact, they buy more now.
People still go to work, they still eat - what they stop doing is
spending $50 to take the family to a movie when, for $20/month, they
can rent 15 movies/month from Blockbuster. They stop buying Florsheim
shoes and buy shoes at Wal-Mart (which is foolish, but that's what
people do).

BISMARCK - The nation's largest group of atheists and agnostics is

The Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation filed the lawsuit

It asks a judge to declare a violation of the constitutional

Nothing in the article says atheists are attacking the Boys and Girl
Ranches. The plantiffs are suing the state for funding the ranches'
religious activities.
