Brace the irony meters, this is a message about an anti-spam product. |
If you are a spammer, ***** YOU, stop spamming me and I'll shut up.
Read no further.
Not really an advertisement, because I don't work for or get paid by
any company associated with the product.
I just hate spam so much that I want to do anything I can against it,
and Mailwasher Pro is the first thing I've seen that I think has hope:
it can report spam to a central database, so within moments of
release, new spam gets tagged as known spam to other Mailwasher users
in real time, and can be sent to SpamCop.
I've been using it for a while, now. It works. It hasn't hosed up my
computer, either.
It's got lots of other features, too, but read about it here:
http://www.firetrust.com/products/mailwasherpro/
In brief:
It costs $40 US, the Firetrust database is free for the first 10,000
or until March/2004, I think. SpamCop reporting-only is free, but you
can contribute, I'm going to send some $ soon.
It's the SpamCop thing that I think is really cool; the Firetrust
database is real people reporting real spam in real time worldwide, so
I believe it acts as a good filter for SpamCop, so as to weed out
erroneous reports.
This in my opinion should enable SpamCop to work with much more and
reliable data to try to get the spammer's accounts revoked.
BTW - IMHO do not sign up in the government's new DO NOT SPAM list -
imagine if it was "leaked" to the spamming community. You know they'll
try their highest bribe to get it (they DO have money, the loudest
voice in politics), and we have the best politicians money can buy.
Instead, there should be a DO SPAM list, a registry of fools that need
to be parted from their money: it'll make it easier for the spammers
and hopefully they would leave the rest of us alone.
(Actually, that's similar to what we should do with marijuana and
drugs: legalize them so they could be controlled. Imagine openly
talking the truth about that with your kid(s).)
("real time" means as fast as the internet and servers can do it, as
opposed to entry on a list for a future update. A better word probably
would be "live")

I've heard good things about it, though I haven't tried it.
SpamAssassin is pretty effective, I find. I like that spamcop feature.
I used to send spam to spamcop (and send my own complaint emails to
the ISP after looking up the originating ip (the one in hex, never the
return address)) but I just don't have the time or energy now.
I heard this one spammer is getting prosecuted by VA. Too bad the
"U-CAN SPAM" law was passed by Congress to supercede laws such as
Virginia's.

My apologies. Yesterday it sounded like a good idea, today I wish
there was a way to un-post it.
I'm kicking myself in the arse on this one.
Thanks for putting me in my place.

Really, I was trying to help. I guess I crossed the line. I will never
do that again.
