An artist's painting of her experience with breast cancer was taken out
of an art exhibition because it was deemed offensive by Telstra staff.
Bryony Dade's Red Line Waiting had been hanging in the foyer of the
Telstra Centre for two days as part of a Cancer Council exhibition for
Daffodil Day before it was taken down by the property managers yesterday.
Ms Dade said her painting, which depicts a woman undergoing radiotherapy
with one breast exposed, was removed because it was deemed "too
confronting" and the partial nudity "offensive".
"I got a phone call from the Cancer Council yesterday saying the
painting was facing the wall because there had been a complaint about
it," she said.
While the Cancer Council assured Ms Dade they were in negotiations with
Telstra's property management company, Investa, the artist was incredulous.
"In today's day and age, I thought it was amazing," she said. "I know
it's a confronting picture, but it's not aggressive and it's not
pessimistic or ugly".
Ms Dade said another painting by an artist who suffered testicular
cancer was also taken down because it showed the "bare bottom" of a man.
After successfully fighting breast cancer for two years, Ms Dade said
she was insulted that a depiction of her personal experience was
considered offensive.
"It's a very personal painting. When I painted it, it was never meant
for huge public display, it was terribly intimate," she said.
Ms Dade said the inspiration for the oil on canvas came to her during
radiotherapy treatment, which she received every day for six weeks.
"As I lay for my radiotherapy treatment I observed the red line as it
meandered over my body," she said.
"I was intrigued by the way it defined the shape of everything it
crossed, so I chose cool colours representing fear".
An Investa spokeswoman said the Telstra employee complained that the
paintings were "controversial and a little bit 'iffy' to be hanging in
the foyer that was open to the public."
However, she Investa and Telstra were returning the paintings to their
original positions for the exhibition opening tonight.
"They have since been put back up," she said.
The exhibition, held every year since 1997, invites stories or artworks
depicting encounters with cancer.
The winner receives a cash prize, and about a third of the entries are
shown in the exhibition, which travels across Victoria for six months.

Ok...not sure what you mean. I should state that Telstra is the Australian
national phone carrier...or at least it will be until the Howard Government
sells it off in a few months!
