Bring on the White Steeds! |
Fiction has constantly shown itself to be more alluring than fact to
the human mind. Fiction may be embellished at will; it may be endowed
with perfect form; it may gratify our merest whim or our deepest
wishes; it may offer a hope or a certainty impossible in "real life".
Fiction - whether in the guise of a simulated drama of somebody's life
or a speculation about the unknown past or the unknown future or about
the nature of existence itself - is free from the shackles of fact.
To compete with fiction it is not enough to tell the unvarnished truth.
The human mind will flee from such an ogre. Thus, we are moved by myth
and story and dream and fantasy. How can truth compete with such
ethereal beauty? And even where we are stirred by powewrful hopes - of
freedom and right - the societies created by the achievement of these
hopes are themselves vulnerable to ancient fantasies.
How compete? To say that the human race is engaged in a colonisation of
this planet is evidently not enough. No dream there. No myth. Just
truth. To say that we are close to a resolution of the tasks and
challenges inherent in such a colonisation does not, as a statement,
possess sufficiient stirring nonsese to move our romantic hearts. We
long for white steeds! To say we are intelligent enough and have
sufficient capability to create a global society where most will be
free and comfortable lacks sufficient outrage to justify our not
believing in the possibility of such a society ever existing. Outrage
has vast self-justifying properties.
