British Muslims want Islamic law and prayers at work
Alan Travis and Madeleine Bunting
Tuesday November 30, 2004
The Guardian
Muslims in Britain want greater recognition of their faith with the
introduction of Islamic law for civil cases and time off for prayers
during the working day, but are equally committed to greater
participation in British life.
A special Guardian/ICM poll based on a survey of 500 British Muslims
found that a clear majority want Islamic law introduced into this
country in civil cases relating to their own community. Some 61%
wanted Islamic courts - operating on sharia principles - "so long as
the penalties did not contravene British law".
Many civil cases in this country deal with family disputes such as
divorce, custody and inheritance.
The poll also found a high level of religious observance with just
over half saying they pray five times a day, every day - although
women are shown to be more devout than men. The poll reveals that 88%
want to see schools and workplaces in Britain accommodating Muslim
prayer times as part of their normal working day.
Alongside these signs of a desire for more recognition of their
religion, however, the poll suggests that the Muslim community is
perhaps more integrated than many might imagine, with 62% saying they
number "a lot or quite a few" non-Muslim people among their closest
friends and 35% saying they would consider marrying someone who was
not a Muslim.
There is also a strong appetite within the Muslim community to become
a closer part of British life, with 40% saying they need to do more to
integrate into mainstream British culture.
The ICM poll was commissioned as part of a groundbreaking Guardian
exercise to gauge the mood of Britain's younger Muslim generation. In
addition to the poll, 103 young Muslims were brought together to
discuss the most important issues facing their future, from identity
and integration to the war on terror.
The Guardian/ICM poll confirms that political support for Labour has
halved since the 2001 general election and the Liberal Democrats have
emerged as the leading political party within the Muslim community.
The role of Britain in the Iraq war and Tony Blair's strong support
for the war on terror which is widely seen by the Muslim community to
be an attack on Islam, has undoubtedly played a part in eroding
Labour's support among British Muslims. In the 2001 general election
it is believed that 75% of those who voted backed Labour.
The voting intention figures in this poll show that support in the
Muslim community for the government is slipping away fast. In March,
ICM recorded Labour support at 38% and it has now fallen a further six
points to 32% of Muslim voters.
This is nine points behind the Liberal Democrats who now enjoy the
support of 41% of Muslim voters. Conservative support has also fallen
in the last six months from 25% to 16%.
Other parties enjoy the support of 10% of British Muslim voters with
4% going to the Greens and 4% to George Galloway's Respect party.
The problem for the Liberal Democrats is that the poll shows turnout
among the Muslim community is likely to be far lower than the general
electorate with only 47% saying they "always or nearly always vote"
compared with 68% of all voters.
ICM interviewed a random sample of 500 Muslim people by telephone
between November 15-21 2004. The data has not been weighted because
there is no authoritative source of demographic information on the
Muslim population. ICM abides by the rules of the British Polling
Council.

Give them free passage to a Islamic country then, with an agreement that
will never return. I'm sure that there must be one or two countries that
have Islamic laws.

I bet it's higher than this in Bethnal Green & Bow.

This all seems like the early stages of assimilation. It compares with
the Jewish population, which exploded in the UK 140 years ago. They have
their own legislature dealing with religious issues (with amusing side
effects, such as the eruv in North London) and their own schools. They
still have their ghettoes e.g. Stamford Hill, Golders Green, but a large
majority are dispersed due to social mobility - having said which,
Golders Green is an upwardly mobile ghetto.
Tony Blur, through his stance on Iraq, has delivered many thousands of
British Muslime into the hands of the Lib Dems, but there are still some
decent Labour MPs who won't lose ground.
My prediction for Bethnal Green and Bow is that the LibDems won't even
stand but will urge tactical voting. Even if they do stand their
supporters will probably vote tactically. Galloway will be the sole
beneficiary of this, which will make it a very close result. Watch out
for posturing by the incumbent Blairite hack.

I was fasicnated when I read that Reagan had armed and trained

What are these highly trained and armed men doing now that Russia is

Probably going to take over Britian and a lot of other countries.

Rather sad that a particular group wants to remain forever un integrated into
mainstream society.
It's bad enough having faith schools - look what that did for Northern Ireland,
but to have your own civil laws. I presume that this means Muslim men will just
have to say "I divorce thee" three times if they want to trade in the wife for a
newer model.
Muslims already have their own schools and banks, how long before shari'a
criminal law?

They aren't faith schools in NI, with the exception of the Free P primary

There *are* faith schools in Northern Ireland, Catholic maintained schools.
Most Catholics go to Catholic maintained schools. There are no Protestant
faith schools in Northern Ireland (apart from, as you say, Free P primary
and arguably 2 or 3 others, not a significant number) only state schools.
However since the population of NI is almost entirely one or the other the
state schools are de facto Protestant schools, in the sense that they are
composed overwhelmingly of Protestants, but they are not "religious schools"
in any formal sense. There are also deliberately "integrated" schools.

You won't be stopped from going to a particular school because you are a
protestant or a catholic. By the same definition the rest of the UK has
faith schools, Australia has faith schools but AFAIK (especially legally)
you cannot stop someone going to a school based on their families faith

Rather sad that a particular group wants to remain forever un integrated
into
mainstream society.
It's bad enough having faith schools - look what that did for Northern
Ireland,
but to have your own civil laws.
They aren't faith schools in NI, with the exception of the Free P primary
schools.
What you tend to find is that anyone can go to any school but unless it
says specifically they're intergrated they don't
There *are* faith schools in Northern Ireland, Catholic maintained
schools.
Most Catholics go to Catholic maintained schools. There are no Protestant
faith schools in Northern Ireland (apart from, as you say, Free P primary
and arguably 2 or 3 others, not a significant number) only state schools.
However since the population of NI is almost entirely one or the other the
state schools are de facto Protestant schools, in the sense that they are
composed overwhelmingly of Protestants, but they are not "religious
schools"
in any formal sense. There are also deliberately "integrated" schools.

Hi,
Well, if the Muslim people's only answer is to kill those who do not
agree with them. That proves that America and other countries are right in
opposing Muslim extremists in Iraq and Afghanistan and anywhere else they
might be.

I was not advocating killing people but, I support military defense of
freedom. Killing is to be avoided but, militant muslims kill people who
love freedom. Only criminals need to fear the police. To law abiding
people, the police are friends.

Hi,
Well, if the Muslim people's only answer is to kill those who do not
agree with them. That proves that America and other countries are right
in
opposing Muslim extremists in Iraq and Afghanistan and anywhere else they
might be.

British Muslims want Islamic law and prayers at work
Rather sad that a particular group wants to remain forever un integrated
into
mainstream society.
After they've killed all us infidel types, they'll *be* "mainstream
society".

Nobody wants genocide. Most Muslims are wonderful, helpful, polite,
caring people who just want peace and live a successfull life.
Only the criminal element i.e. Al Queda, Hamas, Abu Sayaif, etc. need to
be opposed whatever that means. The U.S., Britain, and some other countries
are doing this in Iraq, Afghanistan, and some other places.

There is a thing called the common good. Most people recognize that
the best thing for all people is peace. Therefore peace is the common good.
If Muslims want non-Muslims out of their land in this day and age. It will
not happen partly because of the lack of peace there but, also there will
always be people who like to understand other cultures and live among them.
If the Muslim extremists in Iraq stopped their attacks, the nations
that are there would recognize they are not needed and leave when they were
sure everything was stable. I assure the soldiers want to be home with
their families and the country wants them to be home to. However, if there
is work to be done I am sure they will remain.
The criminals are known by their conduct. Islamic extremists killed
Americans and people from other countries on 9/11 in America. Therefore,
they are criminals. Iraqi insurgents demonstrate they are criminals when
they set off bombs and beheaded people unjustly. I am not deciding anything
but, I can see by what happened that the best thing for America and other
nations to do is to oppose those who bring violence into the world. America
and other nations would not be involved in a war if those countries were
peaceful countries with freedom for their people.

I have not heard about the case that you mention.
There is a problem though in America, that the American Civil Liberties
Union (aka ACLU) is opposing religious freedom all over the U.S. They do it
generally through the law courts and threatened court action. There are
many cases where they have tried to remove Christian and other religious
symbols from public buildings and schools. There may be situations where
they have done the right things but, I have heard about many situations
where they were trying to restrict Christians from doing things that no one
else objected to.
They seem to go after Christian symbols the most but, they have gone
after other symbols as well. It seems to many Christians in America that
they are run by Athiestic interests. A lot of times they will file a court
case under the guise of being on behalf of the people in a certain place.
In America there are quite a few Mosques in some cities and some
Buddhist temples, too. So, I am not aware of any other non-violent group
being restricted in any way.
