Mr Kipling pulls Christmas ad after complaints
A Christmas advertising campaign showing a woman giving birth during a
nativity play has been pulled after nearly 600 viewers complained.
The controversial advert for Mr Kipling cakes opens on what appears to
be a hospital labour ward, with a woman screaming in pain as she gives
birth.
But as the camera pans back to reveal that it is in fact an unusually
explicit school nativity play, one spectator asks whether Mr Kipling
has ever directed before - to the inevitable reply, "No, but he does
make exceedingly good cakes."
The Independent Television Commission has already received 570
complaints about the advert, putting it in the top five most
complained about campaigns of the past decade, says Media Guardian.
Some viewers said they had been offended by the advert, which was
created by Saatchi & Saatchi, while others claimed it was degrading to
women. Some, including a nun and a priest, said it was blasphemous.
Manor Bakeries, which makes Mr Kipling cakes, said it had consulted
representatives of the Catholic and Anglican churches before
broadcasting the campaign and had been advised it was not offensive.
Ofcom, which took over from the Independent Television Commission as
the television advertising regulator this week, has yet to rule on the
complaints.
But the company has decided to pull the advert off air because of the
level of criticism.
A spokeswwoman said it was intended as light-hearted fun but added:
"The very last thing Mr Kipling would want to do is cause offence to
anyone."

This is where xians and atheists reverse roles. After all, xians have been
busily telling us that we have to put up with whatever they dish out us
during xmas. If we don't then we're "intolerant". Now when xians see
something they don't like the "tolerance" BS drops by the wayside. It's a
typical hypochristian double-standard.

That's because you don;t know the definition of "tolerance". It means
"Christianity is right and anything else is wrong".

I find it amusing that an accurate portrayal of Mary giving birth to Jesus
would be considered blasphemous, especially by a group of people who take
a vow of celebacy. Many Christians, especially of the fundamentalist sort,
seem to think that Jesus just materialized in Mary's arms, without all the
grunting and blood and sweat that are a normal part of child birth. And
most *certainly*, the Baby Jesus never saw his mother's vagina!!

I don't, I consider it /perfectly/ reasonable that such be seen as
blasphemous [if one accepts Catholic doctrine, at least - OK so
that would have to be about the largest stretch of 'reasonable'

Mary's immaculate conception -> Mary escaped the punishments of

Yes, well, you'll note that Catholics tend not to eat for a while

ensure only clean stomach juices to digest their saviour in, but I
wouldn't be at all surprised if it's more to do with the sermons.
