BELFAST (CNN) -- Northern Ireland's rival political parties agreed
Monday to a six-week delay to form a power-sharing government, the
parties' leaders announced.

Pro-British Democratic Unionist Party leader Ian Paisley and pro-Irish
Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams met Monday and agreed to restore self-
rule on May 8.

"There are still many challenges but let us be clear, this is an
agreement," Adams said following the meeting, the first between the
two leaders.

Monday is the deadline set under the 1998 Good Friday peace accords
for the two parties to establish a power-sharing executive branch of
the government.

As the March 26 deadline approached, DUP requested a six-week delay
before joining Sinn Fein in a new government, according to DUP
officials.
