As practised, Buddhism is inherently sexist because it holds that
perfection can only be achieved by a male. Any being incarnated as a
female is on Earth only here to learn new karmic lessons and must pass
through a male existence before reaching Nirvana.
Which brings up a curious point. I know of many religions which treat
women like garbage, and many that treat women as superior to a greater
or lesser degree than men, but I can't think of one religion which
doesn't care one whit about gender. Is there one?

And in Pure Land Buddhism, anyone reborn into the Pure Land (kind of like a
heaven) is reborn as a male. Doesn't sound like much of a heaven to me!

$cientology?

Well, that's a completely coined cult, and I don't think it counts.
I was wondering about religions that actually grew up in the wild, as
it were.

Aha. "Real" religions. Can't think of any that are gender neutral...

I don't recall that being a teaching of any branch of Buddhism. My
understanding of the situation is that the Buddha was initially reluctant
to teach women for fear they would cause sexual jealousy and tension among
his male followers, but finally relented and allowed them to be nuns.

Theravada is pretty sexist.

I am curious as to how widespread such beliefs are. As far as I
know, none of the Buddhists I have met believe anything like
that. Of course, westerners taking up eastern religions often
ignore much of the superstition that has accumulated around them.
It is often claimed that Gautama did not want to have any woman
disciples - but some strong minded women persuaded him to change
his mind.
