Bush Kills Hubble |
According to
http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/space/01/16/hubble.telescope.ap/index.html
Bush is going to kill Hubble in order to help pay for his new space
program. Well it was going down anyway - even though it's doing the
best work it ever has, better equipped than it's ever been, and even
though some scientists are still fighting for its maintenance - so
what loss is it?
Deepest space view ever;

The secrets of dying stars:

Well that depends on whether it ever gets replaced. The James Webb
Space Telescope is supposed to replace it in 2011, but I've seen no
confirmation that this is still going ahead under Bush's "let's get a
"man" on Mars regardless of the cost" space plan.
Bush is hardly a great friend of science:

Global warming:

If he'd shown some respect for science during his tenure, I could see
some merit in viewing his plan in a favorable light, but when he
announces a plan in an election year, that's going to cost trillions
of dollars that could be at present, better spent elsewhere, is
undoable at present, comes barely a year after the pride of NASA's
space exploration came flaming to the ground, and given the sloppy hit
rate of Martian success stories so far, I have to question his
motives, if not his sanity.

I think the most likely outcome is a) the parts of the space program
to be abandoned will be and b) the proposed new parts, man on moon and
mars, will be quietly dropped after the election. The likely post
election announced military draft (shhhh) will have to be paid for
somehow.
