Bush kneels before Pope's body
From correspondents in Vatican City
07apr05
US President George W. Bush knelt before the body of Pope John Paul II
early today, paying homage in Saint Peter's Basilica to one of the
leading critics of the US-led war on Iraq.
Italian television showed Mr Bush leading a delegation of US officials
into the basilica and then kneeling before the pope's body lying in
state.
The delegation included Mr Bush's wife Laura and Secretary of State
Condoleezza Rice, both veiled in mourning black. Also present were his
two immediate predecessors Bill Clinton and George Bush senior.
Mr Bush, the first US president to attend a pope's funeral, is one of
about 200 state and religious leaders due to attend the ceremony on
Friday.
Before leaving the United States, Mr Bush said he looked forward "to
honouring the memory of Pope John Paul II".
Although the two leaders clashed over the US-led war in Iraq, Mr Bush
hailed the pontiff earlier this week as a "great world leader".
The US leader met with the pope three times at the Vatican - in 2001,
2002 and 2004 - after taking office in 2001.
John Paul II died early on Sunday at the age of 84.

Interesting, because if I recall right, the pope had speculated as to
GW being the antichrist.
