It's over grub's head that at the time of his second statement, obl was hiding deep in the
bowels of a cave in eastern Afghanistan. He's been there ever since, and there as been no
further attacks in the US.

The concept of 'don't write a check your butt can't cash' should take
hold in our logic on this particular topic. I'd like to believe that
out of everyone in America, when the President says something, we
should at least be able to trust that he'll come through on his
committments.
That OBL hasn't attacked the US since isn't the issue Duke, it's that
Bush pumped everyone up about bringing him to justice, yet then he
decided that it wasn't that important to find him.
I don't understand why this is personally. I'm not even remotely
buying in to the conspiracy theories right now...
I have a feeling that Ted Rall want's to be the lead reporter on the
idea, so he can pull a Woodward and Burnstein - but this one really
doesn't have legs I don't think...nothing will convince those who
believe that Osama didn't blow them up, but that's what this country's
all about.
I just happen to think that the President should make good on his
committments. His words on Osama were not in the midst of a campaign,
he had no obligation to tell us flat out that we'd get him, but he
did. He raised expectations, then ended up coming up short, and to
contradict himself in such a radical way with the second quote
provided...which I remember him speaking at the time and feeling
queasy over...then that's a failure on his part. How anyone could see
otherwise is beyond me.
I can't tell my boss that I'm going to have 5 projects all finished by
the end of the week then only turn in one of them...I'll get fired.
You don't stick your neck out there for the sake of your own image, or
to be a tough guy...Americans deserve to be leveled with...which is
what he did in the second statement and would have been fine in terms
of reality when he was speaking to us on the topic...he would have
been sent through the ringer for failing to come up with him, but the
administration has successfully deflected failures in their Iraq plan
on bad intelligence and it's blown over...the same could have happened
here...
Politically it's uncertain whether it was bad for him to say one thing
then do another, but in terms of his ability as a man to fulfill his
commitments, I'd think long and hard about whether our president
should make good on his obligations, or if big talk and lack of
results is alright in our books. Partisanship aside, his father fell
for what grub laid out above. Bush Sr. has admitted that he was wrong
about a lot of things, especially when it came to the race in '92...
His son has pulled more than one of the 'foot in mouth' deals over his
time in office, but the spin cycle in his organization is phenomenal
in political terms...but as an American who's paying attention to his
performance, I've got to hold a president to his word...maybe not on
every single point or claim he makes on the campaign trail, but surely
once he's in office, as he has no obligation to promise anything by
then.

Not with him helplessly hiding deep in a cave is E. Afghanistan. He is neutralized. We

He's being hunted like a dog right now. What's the problem with the end point yet to
come.
I can't tell my boss that I'm going to have 5 projects all finished by

You wouldn't promise them if you couldn't. In this case, you're rating your own talents.
In the case of obl, we prefer to move cautiously to save American lives with the end game
still guaranteed.
Politically it's uncertain whether it was bad for him to say one thing
then do another, but in terms of his ability as a man to fulfill his
commitments,
I too have to promise projects, but when outside factors stir the pot, I get relief.

How do you know how important Bush thinks finding bin Laden is?
Presumably de-emphasizing bin Laden in public comments could be intended
to marginalize bin Laden as a leader and not build him up further with
more attention. OTOH, efforts to capture or kill him could be going on
at the same or greater levels than ever.

I have been accused of having a blind spot in regard to President George W.
Bush, of not being able to see all the things he has done wrong throughout
his life and especially during his term of office.
These accusations come from those who have no problem at all with letting
Kerry use his medals in VietNam to get himself elected....when he literally
threw those medals away, and spent the last 35 years telling us how ashamed
of them he was.

troublesome question asked of Kerry will be called a "Republican smear",

Jez knows all this. Apparantly it's amusing to him to restart the
whole discussion from scratch again, as if he never heard of a 9/11
Commission report or any of the conclusions about what we knew or
could have acted upon.
The 9/11 commission, like the Hutton and Butler reports in the UK was a
whitewash.

I think sitting there like a stunned mullet (that's a big fish to
you!) when he was told the country was being attacked makes him seem
more than a little incompetent. Then there's the bits where he ignored
briefings on security, then there is the fact he wanted to FBI to take
it's attention away from the Bin Laden family, then there's letting
the entire Bin Laden family leave the country after an attack
supposedly by one of its more murderous offspring.
He appeared clueless & out of his depth at a moment of national
crisis, Amerika was temporarily a headless chicken.

Quick! Change the subject! Don't let the conversation go to Clinton's
failure to do *anything* substantial about terrorism during his eight
years.

OK, let's arrest whole families whenever one of the children is a
suspect.

Unless you're using German, "America" is spelled with a "c".

He tried, but the Republicans stopped him, as you are no doubt aware.

Have they forgotten the vicious campaign to stop his Presidency doing
anything by making him spend all his time defending himself against
the hypcrites who set him up over a *****?

He was responsible for the safety of the US. Bush was warned about
possible attacks. He ignored such warnings and took a holiday.

9/11 is HIS fault?
He was responsible for the safety of the US. Bush was warned about
possible attacks. He ignored such warnings and took a holiday.
And he was supposed to do, in his whole eight months of his first
presidential term, something that nobody else had done in over ten years and
many more incidents, what, exactly?
Do I think that Bush bears some responsibility for not seeing this coming?
Well, yeah. But not as much as Clinton does, or Bush Sr. does...or indeed
anybody else did. It is very difficult for reasonable people to consider the
lengths to which unreasonable people will go.
And I will NOT consider that GWB is any more at fault than anybody else.
Besides which, what do you honestly think he could have done to prevent it?
Look at the firestorm most of the measures he has proposed SINCE 9/11 has
caused, even with the WTC as a graphic lesson in why we need them.
How is it any more his fault than it was Clinton's, or indeed, anybody
else's, save those who actually pulled the knives, and those who sent
them?
And why didn't you address this part?
