Regardless of amount it's still an expansion -- an
improvement over a recession or Depression. I have to
agree that this isn't exactly a "full head of steam",
though, and the deficit is paying for part of this expansion,
a deficit that will become part of the public debt which
is at almost $8.2T -- and counting.
And then there's the missing jobs, though part of
that can be blamed on al Qaeda, Wilma, and Katrina.
(But only part.)
An interesting graphic, BTW:
http://zfacts.com/p/318.html
documents the debt as % of GDP under various Administrations.
Of course the problem with such commentary is that there's
no method by which one can determine whether we would have
been better off had we increased taxes to stave off the
deficits.

No - the deficit is greater than the amount of the expansion,
amounting to some 3-4% of GNP. The "expansion" is an illusion caused
by us living beyond our means - we are really in a recession if one
removes the wealth that we borrowed from our kids.
And people know this, because their paychecks aren't keeping up with
the cost of living.

I don't often reply to political threads, but this one has me
wondering. When people (and polititians) talk about jobs in the United
States, they seem to me to be missing the obvious. Let's imagine that a
small textiles firm in South Carolina is outsourced by its parent
company to South Asia, laying off 500 workers at $17.50 an hour. Let's
also imagine that Wal-Mart opens it's new store in that same town,
hiring all 500 of the redundant workers-at $6.50 an hour. I think
that's why consumer confidence is down, even though the economy
continues to expand. I'm a little tired of hearing "officials"
wondering why the populace is so downhearted as they continue to stuff
their wallets. Perhaps the middle class really *is* disappearing here?

That's just what's happening. Jobs are anything but stable and then the
auto manufacturers, for instance, can't figure out why people aren't
buying.

The good news of a strong economy is nothing but political propaganda. The
growth of our economy is built on increasing borrowing and indebtedness. The
economy is being built on a foundation of sand and the collapse will be
devastating.
It reminds one of the prosperity of the late 1920's before the economy
collapsed into a severe and prolonged depression in 1929.
