Allegations that Allen took false refunds also sadden Va. colleagues
President Bush expressed shock and disappointment yesterday at the arrest of
his former domestic-policy adviser, Claude A. Allen, a Republican who rose
to prominence in Virginia.
Allen, who was secretary of health and human resources in the administration
of Gov. Jim Gilmore, was arrested Thursday in Montgomery County, Md., a
Washington suburb, for allegedly claiming refunds for more than $5,000 worth
of merchandise he did not buy from Target and Hecht's.
Allen, 45, a social conservative, was appointed domestic-policy adviser at
the White House in early 2005. He resigned abruptly Feb. 9, saying he wanted
to spend more time with his family. He had informed the White House before
then of the incident, saying it was the result of a misunderstanding
involving his credit cards, though there was no public disclosure.
Before his resignation, Allen was one of the president's senior black
officials, with a salary of $161,000, the same paid to Bush chief of staff
Andrew Card.
