Oops, another Fred Stone lie debunked.
Considering that the inflation rate last year was 3.24%[1], Bush's 3%
"raise" merely fucks the GIs over.
Why do you NeoCons hate our troops so much?

Bush budget officials said the administration “strongly opposes” both
the 3.5 percent raise for 2008 and the follow-on increases, calling
extra pay increases “unnecessary.”

I really don't want to burst your bubble here Yang, and I clearly
despise the little fucker in the big house as much as some 66% of the
country does. However, the 3.5% increase "suggested" by congress is an
insult to military personal the world over. In fact Yang, sorry to say,
the largest pay raise I ever saw when I was in the service, under Regan,
Bush Sr., and Clinton was never higher then 2.5%.
Congress does not think military people are worth all that much, neither
do presidents or civilians. This is not a democrat / republican thing,
it's a civilian / military thing. It has not changed and is not likely
to change any time soon.

That's pretty obscene. inflation rate during the 3 presidents were 3-4
percent (with the rate lwoeset during Clinton years). Those increases
doesn't even cover inflation during those years.

Agreed, it was pretty bad. Then there were the RIF's and other *****
that went on. I just loved being told we could not get underway for
drills, because there was no money to by fuel and it had to be saved for
real cases and rescues.
Kind of hard to practice a man over board rescue, on dry land.

Granted. But Mister Support Our Troops doesn't even want to give that last
0.5%. If 3.5% is an insult, insisting on cutting it to 3.0% is...

A swift kick in the unmentionables is what it is. Fact is,
shrub-a-dub-dub is following in daddy's footsteps. It is a very clear
case of "like father like son".

Hey, nice to see you back, Mark...

Thanks. But I'm not totally sure I am. I may fade in and out a while.
There's still quite the blizzard of paperwork flying. Especially now that
I'm coming to the point where I'll be closing the estate and ending my
"fiduciary" relationship.
On the other hand, the emotional carp seems to be easing off a lot now. I
think the whole thing turned on realizing I had never had time--with the
move and the "estate" crap and this and that--to feel the loss.
Been seeing a counselor off and on here and realized it was two deaths,
not one. I was becoming really fond of New Orleans, quirky place that it
was, and was thinking in terms of settling there for good. In fact, a lot
of the ideas I had about my own personal future were based on being around
that place. I like quirky and unique. Too much of our country is like an
endless strip mall and it's increasingly hard to tell the difference
between one city and the next.
New Orleans had a personality. One which could also include words like
"lazy" and "corrupt" but it *had one. Then again, a lot of our cities you
get the corruption but you don't get the interesting quirkiness and
personality.
Bob was a friend for something like 15 years so even though he died young,
I had time to get to know him. The city... I had about two years and was
just getting "introduced" when the place vanished.
I mean, whatever New Orleans becomes, the place I knew is gone for good. A
disaster of that scale changes a place. There's still at least a quarter
million (maybe half a million) evacuees that have not returned. Many
can't. Some just don't want to. The destruction of the Ninth Ward wasn't
just the loss of a neighborhood, there was an entire subculture that was
wiped out of existence, people scattered all over the country and left
with nothing to return *to.
But in the last couple of weeks I started catching myself thinking about
what I'm going to do with the yard here and building a new deck and
finally got satellite internet put in and...
I must have shifted gears from this being "place to hide" to "home" in the
last couple of weeks. I'm also getting bored. Which is weirdly a good
thing. I haven't had time to be bored since summer of 2005...
