Don't get me wrong, some of my best friends are fake journalists with
partisan agendas (not that there's anything wrong with it).
Jeff Gannon (a.k.a. James Dale Guckert) was able to get into the White
House press briefing room for almost two years when the only actual
journalism experience on his resume was a two-day seminar.
(Who said the Bush administration wasn't creating jobs?)
Using that criterion, my four months of writing for this paper should
allow me to spoon with Maureen Dowd.
With all "professional" jealousy aside, what a stroke of luck for
little Jimmy!
The kid's got moxie!
It's a classic American tale of a plucky reporter overcoming bogus
press credentials issued under an assumed name and nude photos of
himself posted online.
Sometimes God just drops a premise right in Aaron Spelling's lap.
How was Gannon able to get into the White House without anyone
noticing he wasn't really a reporter, but was instead a gay male
prostitute?
While on the payroll for Talon News (a website owned by Texas
Republican Bobby Eberle), Gannon/Guckert was able to sign in at the
White House under his real name, and have a press pass issued in his
fake one.
Though Talon was previously denied even a congressional media pass,
Jeff/James was in the White House door a month before Talon was up and
running.
Lured by his penchant for lobbing easy questions, the hypervigilant
Bush team welcomed Gannon into their loving arms without thoroughly
checking his background.
Even if one is of the opinion that it's perfectly just for the Bush
camp to stack the deck in their favor, it was a sloppy job on their
part.
It only took left-wing bloggers (excellent band name, incidentally) a
day and a half to discover that Gannon/Guckert rented himself out as a
male escort.
How secure can the homeland be when a simple use of the top-secret
Google device would have revealed Gannon/Guckert spread-eagled and
renting himself out as a "hot military stud"?
Instead, he was allowed to roam the White House eating free samples
and pushing buttons as though he were at Stew Leonard's.
I expect more from my nation's covert dirty tricks; this was strictly
amateur hour.

Oh, they checked his "background" all right. Checked is frontground,
too. They checked him out all up and down. I think they took the
time to feel him out, too. In fact, he was the only White House
reporter to ever have to undergo multiple cavity searches to be
admitted. He was also the only one to have to conduct multiple cavity
searches.
