But Where Do You Get Your "Morals" |
*
Theists often consider it quite the zinger question to ask atheists,
"Without god, where do you get your morals?!!"
I think the appropriate reply is, "Unlike you, I get them from my brain.
Why don't you try using your brain some time?" Theists like to quote
from a stone age tablet because they believe it to be easier than
thinking. But the fact is that they still have to interpret the tablet
and figure out how to apply it. Non-theistic morality does just isn't
constrained by archaic rules and is free to find the best solution to a
given problem that is completely adapted to the conditions at hand. They
don't have to shoe-horn some ancient rule of thumb into a situation where
it doesn't belong, like religious people do, just so that they don't have
to admit their prehistoric religious dogmas are flawed. Theists often
deploy the canard of accusing their opponents of being "relativists", but
actually, all we are saying is that you act based upon your best
information and your best knowledge of the situation. Those details
often matter and it's really not possible to generate a moral decision if
one ignores the contextual details of the case, as absolutists often
demand.
The fact is that certain theists claim to have absolute moral codes, but
in reality, they consider killing wrong in some cases and right in
others, just like everybody else. Their babbling about Moses getting his
tablets from the Canaanite volcano god Yahweh on mount Sinai and all that
other bible BS have no bearing upon moral decision-making.

Uh huh. And when Moses came back down from the "Volcano God" what did he
find the people doing?
Worshipping a golden cow.
Well gee, isn't that special? I wonder why they did that? Hmmm, I wonder why
they would worship that cute little golden cow? I wonder, could it
be.....SATAN?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?!!?
hahaha lol!
Now if grown adults are so stupid to worship an idol, I would say they
needed some special attention or guidance.

Your argument is flawed.
Answer one question:
When someone has a kid, does someone throw the kid outdoors and say, "Use
your brain. You're on your own."?
No, at least not responsible parents.
So it is with Jesus. He taught people certain truths so that we could learn
the easy way instead of the hard way.
Just using one's brain is not going to get someone very far.
If one knows it all, then why go to college?
This is why the "I believe in myself" argument is worthless. Nobody knows it
all, so we share info.
This is why Jesus shared info: So the little children of God could be well
prepared for the obstacles ahead.

It's a very interesting story, isn't it. After the Israelites had
survived the 10 plagues God sent to get them out of Egypt, seen Moses
part the Red Sea and drown the Egyptian army, and actually heard the
voice of God from the clouds, they decide that they can make a better
god than that themselves. They were not very impressed by Jahve, were
they?
Kind of kills the argument that if people had evidence of God they
would not have any free will.
I wonder, could it be.....SATAN?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?!!?
<....>
Well, the Eve and Adam story is another example of people who had med
God and were not impressed. They decided that a talking snake was more
reliable than God.
It's a recurring theme in the Bible, someone who has evidence that God
exists decides that God is not very impressive and it is safe to
ignore his orders. (Salomon, Jonah ...)

You want people to tell you how to improve your spiritual life? Of
course you do, otherwise you wouldn't tell others how to improve
theirs. Ok, here is an excercise you really should try:
Set aside about 20 minutes for the excercise. Turn off your
computer, TV, radio and all other distractions. Sit down and think
about how you would react if somebody suggested you use the Vedas
to organise your daily life. It might help if you write down your
thoughts. Then try to find the similarities in reaction a non-
christian would have to being told that the Bible is the ultimate
religious authority. If you manage those two simple steps you
should have an idea of why nobody gets your talk about the spirit
of Heaven, and you might, just might, get an idea about how to
improve your strategy.
I wonder, could it be.....SATAN?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?!!?

There are contradictions in the Bible that are of course troublesome,
e.g. Judas dying in two explicitly different ways. It's these
metacontradictions, if you will, like the Golden Calf story that do in
the religion for me. God creates the whole universe out of nothing,
performs unimaginable wonders in front of people, and yet the Bible is
just one story after another like this one. Fast forward to Jesus
telling us that He won't be providing any signs, this right smack in
the middle of the Big Golden Book of Signs from God. The Almighty
could use a good editor.

The religion in the OT is really very different from most christian

when that story were first invented and/or written down.

Well, the Eve and Adam story is another example of people who had med
God and were not impressed. They decided that a talking snake was more
reliable than God.
The talking snake was a representation of the Sumerian god Enki who
was supposed to have granted the Sumerians medical knowledge. (To
this day, a snake around a stick is the symbol for medicine.) The
Hebrews hated the Sumerians, probably because they were slaves under
them. [ 1)The Bible claims that the Hebrews were slaves under the
Egyptians and ancient Egypt was almost certainly a Sumerian colony.
2) The Bible identifies Abraham as coming from Sumer. 3) The Tigris
and Euphrates rivers of Sumer are mentioned in the Adam and Eve
myth. ] The myth of the Tower of Babel is another example of Hebrew
hatred of Sumer culture: to this day to "babble" means to speak
nonsense. In both myths, people were either trying to obtain
knowledge (from the tree of knowledge) or use techonology to reach
Heaven (with a tower) and God got angry and stopped them. Apparently
trying to better oneself is bad according to ancient Hebrew thinking,
this being because the Sumerians developed scientific knowledge and
built cities and Hebrews considered all thing Sumer to be bad (except
for the Sumerian god Anu who the Hebrews called Yehweh: He was great).
You know, if the World Trade Centre had been in ancient Sumer and
there existed airplanes at the time that could crash into it and bring
it down then the ancient Hebrews would have said that God was behind
it and that the "towers" were brought down by God to spite men who had
such hubris to build such tall towers in the first place. That's the
mentality of the people who wrote the Bible: it's the exact sort of
mentality that most Ameticans condemn today!

The talking snake was a representation of the Sumerian god Enki who

Kind of kills the argument that if people had evidence of God they

It kills the argument that there was anything miraculous about the
Exodus because after all those miracles that were _supposed_ to have
happened, people were still praising Baal over Yehweh. It also proves
once again that the Hebrews must have originally came from Sumer
because Yehweh and Baal were apparently both competing for praise in
their head, just as they did before in Sumer. Incidentally, Sumer is
located in modern day Iraq, which part of the Arab homeland and Arabs
and Hebrews are both Semites which again indicates that they came from
the same place.

They hadn't been given commandments forbidding it, shitfuck. You appear
to have forgotten that detail. But that doesn't stop Moses from
conducting mass-murder against his own people.
In any event, the Hebrews continued to worship the image of a bull (both
literally and figuratively) in their temple for many centuries afterward.
It represented aspects of the thunder god baal, who was another jealous
competitor in the local pantheon. God is referred to as "The Bull of
Isaac" (and he certainly was *****).
Well gee, isn't that special?
Just like the tree of knowledge of good and evil *****, where they
didn't know good and evil until after they had eaten, how can you expect
people to know that Yahweh had an inferiority complex and self-esteem
issues until after Moses brought down his pathetic forgeries?
I wonder why they did that?
They didn't. It's a *bull****** metaphor. It describes the religion of
competitors in the region. The belief that gods incarnated in animals
like bulls goes back thousands of years in the region to the Sumerian
religion, for example. The Hebrews had little originality.
Hmmm, I wonder why
they would worship that cute little golden cow?
Hey, at least you can actually see and touch a golden cow, unlike the
imaginary god they would later invent.
I wonder, could it
be.....SATAN?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?!!?
No such thing as that either. Anyway, why would it be a sin to worship
another god when they hadn't yet received formal commandments forbidding
it?
hahaha lol!
Now if grown adults are so stupid to worship an idol, I would say they
needed some special attention or guidance.
I agree, which is why you need to stop worshipping your theistic idols.

Quibbler (quibbler247atyahoo.com)
Your argument is flawed.
How so?
Answer one question:
OK.
When someone has a kid, does someone throw the kid outdoors and say, "Use
your brain. You're on your own."?
That seems to be what Yahweh did with Adam and Eve, throwing them into
the garden to fend for themselves, without even a knowledge of good and
evil. He condemned them for thinking for themselves and testing the
faulty information he furnished them.
No, at least not responsible parents.
Your god myth is the biggest dead-beat dad in the universe.
So it is with Jesus.
There was no such actual religious figure.
He taught people certain truths
That's why you can't name any apparently.
so that we could learn
the easy way instead of the hard way.
What did he teach them? That spitting on dirt and rubbing it in a blind
man's eyes would cure his sight? That we shouldn't worry about
tomorrow because the Lard will provide? That we needed to be kind to
each other, even though this was already taught in the Old Testament and
by previous cultures far before his time?
Just using one's brain is not going to get someone very far.
Certainly not in your case. However, the rest of us are quite
comfortable using rationality to guide our behavior. Why are you such a
coward that you refuse to even try it?
If one knows it all, then why go to college?
If the bible has all the answers, why bother to learn anything new at
all? Why bother to do anything at all, if you can just pray for god to
magic it to you? Why try to accomplish anything, when an omniscient,
omnipotent god has already figured out everything worth knowing and done
everything worth doing?
This is why the "I believe in myself" argument is worthless.
Again, perhaps in your case, that's a justified sentiment. However, the
rest of us have actual knowledge and skill in which we can credibly
believe. Humans are clever, hairless monkeys. We got to where we are by
our wits alone, though some like you didn't progress as far down the
evolutionary tree branch.
Nobody knows it
all, so we share info.
Yep and that's called humanistic science. No god is involved.
This is why Jesus shared info:
He contributed nothing of definite value and little that could even be
called original.
So the little children of God could be well
prepared for the obstacles ahead.
His idiot musings and fortune-cookie nonsense didn't prepare anyone for
anything other than preparing priests to fleece a gullible flock with his
flim flam.

Maybe that is what the church is interested in, but have you ever wondered
why there are a million churches?
The churches have a bad history of misrepresenting the Word of Jesus, which
came from the Heavenly Father.
Churches are subject to politics too.
The real church is the temple of your body, which contains your conscience,
which is your direct connection to the conscience of the Universe, the
Heavenly Father.
The Universe has a conscience, and your conscience is connected to it.
That is if you haven't killed it yet...

You have no soul. You apparently have very little mind left either.
Such is the price of a lifetime of theism.
Theism kills brain cells.
Why do you feel that? You have exactly zero support for your beliefs.
The onus of proof is on you, duke. Scientific theories describe the
universe perfectly well. The onus is on you to prove that there is
anything beyond what can be explained by science.
I'm the intelligent one, not you.

already been hit a few times...which might not be enough.
