California And Gay Marriage
By Nicholas Olson
Sept. 7, 2005
It was announced today that California is sending a bill to the governor
approving the rights of gays to marry. I say hurray for ending another form
of discrimination.
Republicans and their bible-thumping constituents can hem and haw all they
want about their sanctity and that it is against the nature of humanity and
whatever. All I have to say is that I am sick to my stomach that this form
of discrimination is even up for debate.
The stupidest argument I have heard in this whole ordeal is the one where
they have men and women marrying their pets. Let's be logical about this.
If a man wants to marry a woman, he needs her consent, at least in this
country. Since when does your dog ask you to marry it? I can see it now. It
gets down on one knee and pulls out this ring... Wait, that never happened.
The next argument is about sanctity. You know, when two heterosexual people
divorce at over 60 percent of all marriages and infidelity runs rampant and
don't get me started on alimony. Besides, if you want to get married in
this country, shouldn't gays have the same right to be as happy and
miserable as a hetero couple?
The most controversial reason why I am happy about this decision is because
it opens the door for the secular part of our culture to go for the jugular
of the religious right. You see, if you want to call marriage a religious
ceremony or a representation of their love before a spiritual being, then I
can go to the words of James Madison where he specifically noted that there
is a distinct separation of church and state. If religious people want to
keep their precious word "marriage," then they can do without the rights
afforded by our government to married people by having an equitable
separation of this right for all citizens. This would mean that you could
be married but get no benefit by it. After all, if it only matters in the
eyes of God that you are married then be married with no benefits.
Anti-homosexual sentiment is born out of need to discriminate against
something. At once mixed race marriage was looked down upon, so will we
adapt to gay marriage.
Americans are going to have to start realizing that change is going to come
in the form of the future youth, those that feel that the current adults
are messing things up, will not tolerate the indignities of the past. It
happened in the 1860s, it happened in the 1960s and it will happen in the
not-so-distant future. Learn to deal. California is on their way. Why not
in your state?

Really? The burden of proof is totally on me, eh? You're the one that
asserted that kids will get confused. I did not. You prove it.
You are the one who wants to marry a man, so you should present an
evidences that it is not going to confuse kids.
I'm a straight, married man, and I'd like to know how same-sex marriage
is going to confuse kids. Are the kids in Spain, Canada, The
Netherlands and the State of Massachusetts (all places where same-sex
marriage is legal) confused? What evidence can you provide?
Logic is on my side so I do not need to prove anyting.
Logic is a tool. To apply it correctly, you reason from starting axioms
to a desired conclusion. However, those axioms must themselves be
supported in some way, and the logical operations which lead from the
axioms to the conclusion must be correct.
Kids know that the only way to replenish human population...
The world is in no shortage of people. How will same-sex marriage cause
all those births to stop happening? After all, same-sex marriage exists
in many places, and babies are still being born in those very same
places.
It would appear that the evidence is against you.
... it is marriage and a family, ...
Babies are born outside of marriage. There are many different kinds of
families.
but if someone like you come to the school and assert that same thing can be
reached by legalizing sodomy between two man that will create a confusion at
very least.
I can see this will take some work:
1. Same-sex marriage is legal now in many places.
2. In those places, babies are being born to women who are married,
single, and members of lesbian couples.
3. In those places, both mixed-sex and same-sex couples are raising
children.
4. There are many children who are in foster homes, and in need of
families who will raise them.
5. Single adults, same-sex couples and mixed-sex couples are all
adopting children and having families.
6. Sodomy is enjoyed by both mixed-sex and same-sex couples. This has
not stopped babies from being born.
7. All of the studies to date show no appreciable difference between
children raised by mixed-sex couples and those raised by same-sex
couples. The children of same-sex couples don't appear to be confused.
Now, that evidence can you offer to counter the seven points I have
just presented?
Do you have any? Any at all?

rewind couple of messages back and you will find it. I have not idea
what is going on in kid's mind, however I know that if you present
confusing statements it will create confusion.
The world is in no shortage of people. How will same-sex marriage cause
all those births to stop happening?
There is a shortage of people in industrialized nations, population of
native europeans is decreasing, (use libraries and internet to educate
yourself) and I did not say it is happening solely because of
gay-marriage. My opinion is that disrespect to institution of marriage
and family is a main reason for low birth rate.

I think it is silly, why should I counter your points. You can think
whatever you want, you already set a goal to destroy institution of
marriage, so you just trying to find justification for your actions. I
presented you reasons why I think same sex union should not be
equialized with marriage. Unfortunately some things cannot be proven,
it just the way it is, whether you like it or not. For example it is
very hard to prove why we should work during the day and sleep during
the night. It just our nature, it does not matter how fiercely you
fight against nature, nature always prevails, but many lives (if not
all) will be lost in the process.

You should address them because they constitute, IMO, very pursuasive
evidence that your position is without merit... especially since you
have failed to provide any supporting evidence of your own. All you've
given us, in effect, is "chirabbit says so."
You can think whatever you want, you already set a goal to destroy
institution of marriage,
I'm a happily married man. Why would I want to destroy an institution I
spent no little effort joining? Also, I've told you, and am telling
you, again that I do not want to destroy the intitution of marriage.
Indeed, I want to strenghten it.
So please, stop making that false claim.
so you just trying to find justification for your actions. I
presented you reasons why I think same sex union should not be
equialized with marriage. Unfortunately some things cannot be proven,
it just the way it is, whether you like it or not.
Then you offer us nothing but unsubstantiated opinion. Why should we
take it seriously?
For example it is
very hard to prove why we should work during the day and sleep during
the night.
Well, that depends on exactly what you mean... your language is very
imprecise.
It just our nature, it does not matter how fiercely you
fight against nature, nature always prevails, but many lives (if not
all) will be lost in the process.
It is the nature of homosexuals to feel romantic and/or sexual
attraction to members of their own gender, and to form pair bonds with
them. By not allowing them to marry, you are working against their
natures.
Now, tell me, exactly how will "many lives (if not all) will be lost",
if same-sex marriage is legal, taking into account that it is already
legal in many places?

I have no idea what you are talking about, in that we have something

Gays and lesbians don't have the legal right
(everywhere except Massachusetts, that is) to marry the consenting
adult of their choice. Straight people do
How come right to write drug prescription is given exclusively to
doctors?
Ah, you're getting desperate. Good.
Doctors can write prescriptions because misused drugs have a
definable, immediate effect upon the health of the person taking them.
Please define the immediate physical effects, as demonstrated in
medical literature, of having two gay strangers marry in your home
state.
Why only military personnel have a right to blow the bombs?
They don't. Civil engineers, special effects technicians, police bomb
squad members, farmers, miners... lots of people can blow ***** up.
Hell, I've got a valid demolitions certification hanging on the wall
right now!
But again, misused explosives can maim, kill, and cause unnecessary
property damage. Please cite references to when a gay marriage caused
a massive pressure overshock moving at speeds of at least 26,400 feet
per second.

create new alternative. I just do not understand what gay people want.
They want to normalize homosexuality.
They want the same legal rights as everyone else. You have given no
reason why they should not beyond your bigotry, a bigotry reconfirmed
by your above statement.
They have the legal right to marry ONE person of the OPPOSITE sex.
And Blacks had the legal right to marry other Blacks, just as Whites
had the legal right to marry other Whites. It was still
discrimination.

This is idiotic. It's just like those that said, "Blacks have as much
right to marry within their own race as whites."

What does bigamy have to do with the current subject?

What does bigamy have to do with interracial marriage or same-sex

Who did the anti-miscegenation laws discriminate against? After all
both Blacks and Whites were allowed to marry the same-race person of
their choice. Even so the laws were found to be discriminatory.

looks like you have symptoms of imbecility, That is exactly why laws
were discriminatory, because marriage had a definition of union of one
man and one woman. Or you trying to say that at that time defintion of
marriage was "union of one man and one woman of the same race".
You trying to do quite opposite, you want to change a defintion of
marriage, structure of marriage and then say that your civil rights are
violated. Your civil rights are not violated by any means, at this
point.
