Call centre head blasts sweatshop claims

Thehead of an under-fire Cardiff call centre has dismissed
claims that its staff can go to the toilets during their breaks.
Australian Anthony Scott, head of customer service at AA
Insurance, insisted the centre was not a "sweat shop" and
said the time the 600 employees had away from their desks
had been increased.
The GMB union released e-mails from Mr Scott suggesting
that 10-minute breaks should be used to visit the toilet or to
get a drink.
GMB senior organiser Paul Maloney claimed: "The performance of AA call centre staff,
including all breaks and going to the toilet is subject to detailed surveillance and
logging and the data is used for pay and discipline."
But Mr Scott said: "We have increased the amount of breaks for staff. Full-time
workers get 20 minutes on top of their lunch break, instead of 15 minutes previously.

"To suggest that people cannot go to the toilet outside of their break is absurd. We
wouldn’t agree with treating people like that.
"We have scheduled specific breaks for staff, and increased the allowance to avoid
too many people going at the same time and putting an increased workload on their
colleagues.
"For the GMB to suggest that people are logged when they leave their desks to go to
the toilet is wrong. They log off because that prevents calls being put through when
no one is sitting at a desk.
"We fully support and develop our employees and it’s certainly not a sweat shop. In
the last year we had a staff turnover of 11 per cent, low for call centres, and our
sickness rate is under five per cent," he added.
