A group of Israeli intellectuals and activists has demanded that the
Nobel prize committee withdraw the award for economics to be made today
to an Israeli mathematician and his American colleague on the grounds
that they are "warmongers".
The economics prize is to be presented to Robert Aumann of Hebrew
University in Jerusalem and Thomas Schelling of Maryland University in
recognition of their "having enhanced our understanding of conflict and
cooperation through game-theory analysis", a mathematical study of how
individuals and governments react to other people's actions including
in war.

Hmmm. Should we struggle to remain ignorant about a field if it seems
to be a moral problem? Wouldn't we want to know how it works, and why
it comes about? I can't imagine retroactively withdrawing a Noble prize
just because it later turns out that the theory behind it is wrong,
either. Are there provisions in the Noble rules for withdrawing a
prize? Do such rules exist?
I would think the only good case would be if fraud were established; if
significant information came to light later that would have prevented
the prize from being given nthe first place. Do I think they always
make the right decision? Hell, no!
I mean, give the peace prize to Henry Kissinger? What were they
thinking?

Giving one to Yasser Arafat comes to mind.
Or Mohammad "I don't think we should go to enforcement" Baradei.
