Can Australian Labor fight 'terrorism' as an American ally?
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The 'war against terrorism' is in fact a phony 'defensive' war. The
real 'struggle for freedom' is against the power of US plutocracy to
utilize presidential power as a meal ticket- a charity fundraiser for
the billionaire plutocrats via presidential control of the US
military.
Most Americans and Australians don't realize that their true enemy is
a defective political system that has been hijacked by plutocracy.
If US corporations are not doing too well economically on the home
front, what has been the customary solution? Militarist adventures and
star wars dream-schemes where the procurement process will insure a
steady profit stream. More weaponry can be handed out to client states
like Zionist Israel and more billions of US tax dollars in the back
pocket of the billionaires. Defense bases across the world have to be
maintained- another bonus in their back pockets, as Halliburton
supplies them.
But when the smoke clears from the battlefields and the scars of the
millions of victims are counted, the USA is hated as the most
obnoxious 'rogue' state on Earth- particularly in the Middle East and
Muslim Asia where Muslims perceive the reality of American power and
their victim-hood.
Terrorism it inevitably the last tactic of a desperate subjugate who
aspires to the same freedoms as those enjoyed by the citizenry of the
sovereign nations. The catalyst for conflict begins with imperial
encroachment, occupation, and repeated bouts of imperial reprisals in
retaliation for insurrection. But since Imperialism is a difficult
policy to openly advocate, our contemporary plutocratic imperialism
characterizes its bloody reprisals, under the religious concept
'retribution', a concept that can be brain-washed into the masses from
infancy. In a yet more cryptic discourse, such acts are merely
labeled 'defensive measures' and passed off as necessities in time of
war.
But the projection of power to secure new interests, as readily as to
defend old ones, raises the question: at what point does the use of
power become abuse? While Europe looks on like a frightened spectator
at the masacres of Fallujah or the murders at abu Ghraib, the US veto
in the UNSC protects plutocracy from international restraint. With
increased militarism, sans reform of the international system of
justice, jaw-jaw becomes war-war, as readily as the terrorist night
follows the imperial day.
Australia, as neighbor to the most populous Muslim nation on Earth,
cannot afford to be the USA's lackey in Asia, willing to change its
tune to whatever Washington wants to hear, irrespective of the quality
of the president anointed by US plutocracy.
What those 'terrorists' are merely saying by the tactic of 'terror',
is that they want the same 'rights' as others, not the curtailed
ghetto rights of the 'untermenchen' herded into the refugee camps.
Wanting freedom and taking the steps towards achieving it, becomes a
military struggle between the imperial force for subjugation and the
resistance force for liberation.
What interest does Australia have in a world subject to US imperial
hegemony, a world subject to the Imperial whim of the US president
with a gun in one hand and his propaganda notes in the other? It ought
to have a big interest because the big stick and lies fail to work in
the long run!
Why? Simply because resistance struggles are infinitely adaptable to
the conditions, like bacteria - the longer you subject any organism to
aggressive attacks the stronger it evolves over time and grows
stronger. The Anglo-imperial empire did not suddenly emerge overnight.
It is the product of a millennium of invasions of the British Isles,
each teaching the English the reality of power.
Somewhere along the way, in the scions of the empire, arrogance has
set in as a substitute for rational thought, as though power in itself
provides the magic bullet for infinite neo-imperial gold-digging. In
rational times, it was perceived as a means to an end -security and
the preservation of territorial sovereignty, not the be the 'be all
and end all' means to everything the president wants, and by extension
what plutocracy wants- thus in the context of recent history- the
ultimate end game.
The Jewish neo-cons have sold this grand 'vision' (along with numerous
other cultural perversions of reality) in the mistaken believe that US
power alone will deliver not only a Greater Israel but also a
Palestinian ghetto underclass that it may exploit, at will,
indefinitely, like the good old days of Jim Crowe. Republicans can
empathize along with Trent Lott with that aspiration, but it is an
artificial reality founded on illusion. The Islamic suicide bomber has
a lot in common with the resistance aspirations of the American Negro
under threat of the white lynch mob. (If you doubt it -see the poem by
the Black resistance poet Claude McKay below- particularly the last
few lines)
But the illusion of American invincibility leaves Australian Labor in
a quandary- under Latham's leadership they will know the reality of
the problem of US power but in the context of a Capitalist press
controlled by Australian and US plutocrats- how would Latham get the
message across to the voters. Paradoxically not only is the USA
perceived as the problem, but also our solution in time of war- ally
via treaty. The best that Latham can hope for is that he can talk
about a 'conditional' relationship between 'equals' about a
constructive active relationship with the people of America where
ideas for world peace and initiatives flow in both directions. That
Australia will be an active partner for world peace working with all -
Europe, Asia, and the USA but particularly through the UN. The voters
will read between the lines and get the drift- Australia will be
lackey no more of the US far Right! But should Latham backflip on the
Iraq withdrawal at the urging of Rudd, he can wipe 10-15% off his
primary vote.
While the fundamental problem is US presidential power, it cannot be
addressed overnight, nor can it be ignored indefinitely- Europe knows
it, the world knows it, and Latham knows it, but it will take a lot of
guts to follow the hard road rather than an expedient kow-tow that
temporarily reduces the heat on Labor defense policies by way of a
concerted scare campaign by Howard, but leaves thousands of Australian
vulnerable to Islamic reprisals. If Australia gets out of America's
wars it's possible that America's opponents might leave us alone
despite our past involvements in them, but perhaps, more importantly,
is sends a message to the wider America public to question why its old
allies are deserting them in droves.
Howard on the other hand, is given an easy run by the plutocratic
press. He largely says what he likes and they lap it up like gospel.
'Was Saddam ever a terrorist, prime minister? Yes, there is a case he
was, he gave thousands to the Palestinians associated with suicide
bombers.' or words to that effect.
As usual the press gallery offered no challenge to such a bland
assertion- probing its assumptions and implications. Does giving money
to the families of 'terrorists' who had been the subject to the
collective punishment of Israeli house demolition, make Saddam a
terrorist? Do the families of the bombers qualify as terrorists? Nor
was he asked what international law made that a just outcome? And if
so, why don't we adopt house-demolition here to combat crime? Or what
is the basis for the Right of the Jews to issue collective punishment?
A right granted by God? If so, how is our war on terrorism unconnected
with religious views?
The great danger for Australia is that the rot doesn't stop with the
press. The intelligence agencies have become semaphores for the
government line. Instead of reporting what might happen in reality,
they report what the government wants.
The standard dogma of the gung ho Right under Howard is that the USA
is a 'liberator' not an 'occupier' or imperialist and as such,
irrespective of the damage and carnage done in the process of
liberation (the hundreds of thousands of uncounted victims of
America's wars)- as liberators they deserve garlands of flowers and a
ticker tape welcome not ugly 'terrorist' reprisals against them.
What the Australian police commissioner did not have the guts to say
openly was that Howard's 'attitude' did not resonate with the
'attitude' of potential enemies of the USA and by association, with
the potential enemies of Australia-so the Howard attitude was
irrelevant to intelligence considerations. Muslins are potential
enemies of the USA and by association Australia but - not in the
Howard dogma. The Bali bombing showed that reality doesn't follow the
Howard script but has a common sense logic all its own. Real
intelligence officers would know that, but time serving hacks keen on
political appointment and advancement might not.
Academia itself- the last bastion of independent thought is yet to
become yet another semaphore, with a report on Terrorism due out
before the next election. The report that Howard wants to hear is
something echoing the Bush non-sense that:
'They (the terrorists) hate us for what we are, not what we do'
This has all those magic ingredients for propaganda, forget about
history- just look at the craziness of the enemy-the bloodshot pupils
and frothing mouth, the wanton random acts of the suicide bomber. It
reminds one of the old Dr. Goebels films of the Jews surrounded or
associated with a plague of mice. How could we reason with them and
reach any political compromise?
The pseudo scientism of the report, a white paper for militarism, is
designed to bedazzle the few remaining skeptics with scientific
certainty. The psychological stereotyping of the terrorist 'enemy' as
insane and the imperial expansionists as rational and peace loving
citizens- expanding their domains in 'freedom' well within the
parameters of their natural rights and aspirations. The is the kind of
'report' on 'terrorism' that gung ho Howard will trot out before the
next election with the help of willing academics.
The moral illusion that some groups are infinitely 'special' or
different from others, even morally superior, is never subject to
objective criticism or analysis. Without critical analysis of the
foundations of a conflict, the propagandist takes full control. The
act of one party defined as 'terrorism' yet the same act of its
opponent 'retribution'. The propagandist ensures that the public are
offered only disingenuous pronouncement that suit the interest of the
regime they serve. They can then be told that the causes of crime are
criminals, so the causes of terrorism must be terrorists. Transforming
conflict into a pathology removes the historical context that is
crucial to its understanding the imperial-resistance relationship that
culminates in the cycles of violence.
Imperialism wants victory not understanding hence the foundation of
plutocratic imperialism depends on commonly held myths and illusions
as much in dealing with the common criminal who threatens their
property interests as the international 'criminal terrorist' who
threatens their expansion.
The bottom line of the Howard report will be full support for the
surgical strikes against the pathological leadership of the
'terrorist' enemy anywhere on Earth with all the technology available
to the coalition of the willing despite the fact that more innocent
bystanders die in the process than actual targets. Basically what the
current Washington hawks already grant to their commander in chief
-the right to be judge, jury and exercutioner. No wonder the American
Jewish Council has just rewarded Howard with its highest honor for:
'his steadfast friendship with the United States and strong support of
Israel'
With the show trials of 'terrorists' scheduled both in the USA and
Australia in the run up to the election, a re-run of history-with or
without Dr. Goebel's firing squads. But while this pantomime goes on,
the realty is that eventually the Muslim resistance will reach our
shores to dramatically upset our illusions, just as those of the Nazi
myth makers were upset at the close of WW2. Myth and illusions are no
ultimate defense against the tide of reality.
With a few more hundreds of Australians dead in our streets, then
reality will set in with a vengeance. As the numbers climb into the
thousands, the reality of 'terrorism' will have to be confronted not
just the process of attaching propaganda labels to demonized
opponents. The possibility of massive civil unrest by a resurgent left
and the likely suppression of unrest by a rightist government ruling
under martial law and draconian anti terrorist powers would be a
horrid outcome for Australia likely to produce the upheavals more
characteristic of South American banana republic.
Latham will be accused of fanning the flames of anti-Americanism by
Howard, so he better get ready to calmly explain the fact that
international peace is good for Americans and the world generally, but
the reality is that somewhere along the way we lost it, and perhaps we
lost it, because somewhere along the way we stopped listening,
thinking that power alone would be enough to save us from 'all'
eventualities. It a tough job that needs to be done, but I think
Latham can do it.

"If We Must Die"
---------------------
If we must die, let it not be like hogs
Hunted and penned in an inglorious spot,
While round us bark the mad and hungry dogs,
Making their mock at our accursed lot.
If we must die, O let us nobly die
So that our precious blood may not be shed
In vain; then even the monsters we defy
Shall be constrained to honor us though dead!
O kinsmen! We must meet the common foe!
Though far outnumbered let us show us brave,
And for their thousand blows deal one death blow!
What though before us lies the open grave?
Like men we'll face the murderous, cowardly pack,
Pressed to the wall, dying, but fighting back!
