Car hits praying morons proving that *Prayer kills* |
A car slammed into a group of high school jocks, praying on the side of
the road. One died and three were seriously injured. I'm sure there
will be some lame apology as to why jebus allowed these clueless kids
to be blind sided by an automobile, while deep in hypnotic prayer to
the imaginary being. But it does go to show that prayer is a dangerous
thing. Surely if lightning struck an atheist while he was blaspheming
their gawd, the story would appear on every pulpit by next Sunday. It
would be proof of the "wrongness" of the atheist life style. Well,
apparently the life of stuporous prayer is not particularly safe
either. I haven't heard of a lot of atheists dying because of their
religious views. But I hear of people dying all the time because of
their bizarre religious practices.

LULING, Texas (AP) -- A car struck a group of high school cross country
runners who had gathered to pray on the side of a highway, killing one
and injuring at least three others, police said.
The accident happened early Saturday as the 10 Luling High School
students were about to embark on their morning two-mile run, the Austin
American-Statesman reported in its Sunday editions.
The driver has not been charged, police said.
One student died at a hospital in Luling. Three others were transported
by helicopter to a hospital in Austin, where one was treated and
released and another was listed in good condition Saturday night.
Information on the third runner was not available.
Others in the group suffered minor injuries.
Police did not release the students' names.
Luling is about 40 miles south of Austin.

Probably not. It's rare to see any mention of the dead.

I was standing in line in a Subway Shop, and the woman in front of me
was holding a little girl about five, with her foot bandaged up and
looking very much out of it. Her mother explained to the cashier that
the girl was playing on the porch railing, had slipped and impaled her
foot on a branch. The branch broke off, the doctor drugged her,
removed it, cleaned it up, antibiotic, bandage, painkillers, etc.
Mom said "Jesus was with my little girl this day!"
The only thing I could think was "I hope to Hell Jesus doesn't ever
come stay with me for a few hours".

One thing I didn't see in the thread is *where* the people
were standing, which would determine my own sympathies for
them, if any. I can't connect to CNN as I read and write
this, so my take on it is not yet concrete.
If they were standing on the sidewalk and trying to stay out
of harm's way, then yes, they deserve condolences. They were
wasting their time and energy, but they weren't endangering
themselves or anyone else. (I would never stand near a road
without looking around, but that's me.)
But if these god-bots were standing *on* the paved tarmac,
eyes closed and oblivious to reality (in more ways than one),
blathering "JEEEBUS" while a car is bearing down on them,
then I can't call this anything but a group of deserving
Darwin award winners.
But it does go to show that prayer is a dangerous

You're spot on with that one.

So they were in harm's way of their own volition, and chose
not to take any safety precautions like having one member

No sympathy is deserved here if that's the case.

less of them now, so I guess there was a silver lining after all :)).

Had anyone who thinks it's funny in the reading of it been there when

I just think that politics separated from reality too often makes us
meanspirited and callous.
It's the prime weakness in our characters that the priest and
politician so easily cultivates.
After all...how could the priest or politician be our saviours if
there wasn't something to save us from?

It doesn't matter whether it's a Democrat or Republican a communist a

It doesn't matter whether he is gay or straight.

And we too often follow like sheep laughing at the misfortune that the
evil fools among us so justly deserve....even to the point of killing
them ourselves.
It's a sad waste of decent humanity imo.

I agree that praying in general is not necessarily dangerous. The fact
that these folks were apparently quite stupid probably had more to do
with their injuries than the fact that they were religious zealots.
But prayer certainly didn't help. Highly religious people are so
brainwashed to pray that they do it at inappropriate times. I've seen
delusionally religious people drop to their knees in the middle of a
dangerous situation and start praying, rather than taking practical and
rational action, to save their own lives.
Only a retard prays on the side of the

Oh, I agree. But I would add that it takes a retard, in general, to
believe that prayer could accomplish anything productive anyway. The
most it appears capable of doing is endangering people unnecessarily.
(good points though).
Thanks. I understand where you're coming from. But it's something of

Well, not all theists believe in the efficacy of prayer, but I'm not
out to argue every little point. Yes, one occasionally runs into one
or two people who seem reasonably intelligent and are also
accidentally theists. Most of these people are not fundamentalists,
however. They probably largely manage to avoid religion in their daily
lives and only do it for an hour on odd Sundays because they were
taught to go to church by their parents. Studies show that close to
90% of people remain in the religion that their parents taught them.
The problems seem to arise when people become excessively devoted to
religion and feel compelled to defend their kooky, irrational views no
matter what. At this point religion starts to rot the brain, because
it teaches these people to distort the facts and argue fallaciously,
merely to support their dogmas. You will find few people who are avid
fundamentalists and also intelligent. Religion simply closes too many
doors to effective and critical thinking. Religionists tend to have
the attitude that their bible already has everything worth knowing, so
there's little point in learning much else. It's a recipe for simple-
mindedness and ignorance.
the point I
was trying to make is that when you are on the side of (I'm guessing)
a busy road you keep your eyes on the road and moving objects.
OK, but religious extremists probably feel that *gawwwwwwd* will
protect them during prayer. Many religious fanatics have gone to their
deaths after being told by their priests that arrows and bullets would
not hurt them and that gawd would keep them safe. Some soldiers in
Iraq right now are carrying around little prayer amulets that are
supposed to protect them. You're not dealing with highly rational
people here. I agree that common sense tells you that you shouldn't
kneel down, close your eyes and start praying on the side of a busy
road. But common sense is in short supply in the theist brain.
BTW, I apologize in advance if I come across as a bit too anti-
religious. I just have a low tolerance for stupidity, especially when
it's done in the name of religion. I mean, I bet some preacher is
even gonna say that these kids suffered and died for jesus. The actual
reason they died is because reality doesn't stop working just so people
can indulge in stupid behaviors.

I understand what you are saying about the irony.
I just don't think it's a humorous example of theist absurdity.
It was a pointless and useless death and I find it very sad.
This on the other hand <I posted it before> is imo very funny.
A few years ago a television crew made the scene of a fire at a local
church caused when lightning hit the steeple.
They broadcast live the almost mind boggling images of the
congregation standing in a circle in the rain, heads bowed, holding
hands and praying while the firefighters fought the blaze in the
background.
When the members of the church were interviewed they expressed their
appreciation for the "fact" that God had protected them and were
thankful that no one was hurt.
The guy hurled a lightning bolt at them and they were thanking him.
Another that was especially sick imo was an image of tornado damage in
a town in which several people had been killed.
Some woman had taken a photo of a church that had been destroyed and
there was an image that resembled Jesus in the clouds.
She sold copies of it on the internet for a while.
No one was hurt in the church though several were injured and they
were all absolutely terrified and of course God got the credit for
saving them.
*****!
Same goes for their imaginary god, only more so.
You are not being sensitive here.
Before He created everything there was nothing but Him in existence.
He simply went stark raving mad from the isolation.
There is ample evidence not only from the writings He dictated to
certain other loonies to be written down in that awful book of His,
but also in the way He admits He abused defensless human beings and is
apparently very proud of the fact.
Now if you were honest about the matter wouldn't you admit that if you
had spent all those countless eons with no one to talk to, no one to
play with and no parents to teach you the right and proper way a
gentleman should behave you might be just a bit out of whack and
somewhat socially inept yourself?
Seriously though...isn't it strange that this god who exhibits all the
terrifying negative attributes including murderous cruelty, dishonesty
and arrogance that we as a relatively civilized species detest in
other tyrants is worshipped by so many?
That's the really mind boggling thing to me.
Btw, ignore my smartass remarks.
I've had way too much death to deal with in the past couple of years.
I'm a bit hypersensitive to the thought of it at the moment.
