Catholic Charities programs deal with 'poverty' of absent fathers |
Once again, the Catholic Church will not be afforded the credit that
it deserves. This program to help these young mothers are located
mainly in the colored and Latino communities, where the church has
always been heavily involved. Young negroes and their Puerto Rican
counterparts have routinely abandoned their responsibilities. leaving
a vacuum that no one but the Church would or could fill.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (Catholic Online) - Many children throughout the
United States face a poverty not measured in dollars and cents - the
poverty associated with absent fathers.
In an effort to meet the challenges experienced by young people, many
of whom faced crippled development and sense of self-worth, many local
U.S> Catholic Charities agencies are offering programs to help low-
income fathers become and stay engaged in the lives of the their
children.
"There's no question that children are better off when both parents
are involved in their lives, but this is too often not the case, as
nearly 14 million children under age 15 live with a single mother,
said Rev. Larry Snyder, president of Catholic Charities USA.
"Sadly, millions of these children have fallen into poverty as a
result," he said. "By helping low-income dads, these local Catholic
Charities programs are reducing many of the challenges that cause
families to fall apart and children to fall into poverty."
In St. Louis, Mo., the Catholic Family Services' Fatherhood Initiative
provides group counseling and education sessions to help fathers
improve their own economic stability and develop personal and social
skills to more positively affect the lives of their children.
The six-week intensive course, which meets for several hours daily,
helps men learn how to engage with their children in positive ways and
take on the responsibilities of fatherhood. The program also provides
education on job search and interviewing skills, healthy behaviors and
lifestyles, anger management, life skills, money management, substance
abuse, parenting, and violence prevention.
As well, the men are able to get a physical exam and routine health
care, an important support since many of the men have been using drugs
and eating poorly for many years.
The program also helps men understand how to interact with the legal
system and the child support enforcement agency, get their names on
their children's birth certificates, and develop a co-parenting plan
with their children's mother. Upon graduation, participants receive a
$300 stipend to be applied to child support.

No doubt that charities (Christian or otherwise) in general do worthwhile
and 'good' work.

especially Catholic. Pray and believe and God will provide, for you,
have faith.
God, and reality helps those that help themselves, t'is better to

pity.
Churches depend on Charity, and resent the competition from beggars.
