Catholic League calls off boycott after Wal-Mart apology |
Amazing how Wal-Mart saw the light when their dollars were being threatened.
Catholics should start using their economic clout.

A Roman Catholic civil rights group called off a boycott of Wal-Mart on
Friday after the world's largest retailer apologized for an employee's
e-mail that called Christmas a mix of world religions. "This is a sweet
victory for the Catholic League, Christians in general, and people of all
faiths," said Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League for Religious
and Civil Rights, said in a statement on the group's Web site. Wal-Mart
Stores Inc. said Thursday that a customer-service employee named Kirby had

H.
I'm sorry you can't be happy with a wish for a nice holiday. Must be
a miserable life you have.
Not so miserable, I daresay, as those who are offended by the
expressions of faith of their fellow human beings.
& not nearly so miserable as those who refuse to grasp that not
everyone shares those beliefs, or, even worse yet, grasp the
concept but refuse to be in the least polite about it.
• I view impolite reactions such as threats of death, threats to "smash
yo' mo fo face", on and on, from True Believers as a clue that they have a
trace of the taste of taurine feces left over in their mouths from
"religious education" (a.k.a. inculcation) during their early years --- i.
e., there's quite often a tender nerve behind the bull's-eye.
cheers, Susan

Yes, as I've always said, vote with your feet. Catholics (and all
Christians) seem to be finally starting to stand up to the ridiculous
sanitizing of the 'holiday' season. I'm going to raise a toast to Mr.
Donahue and the Catholic League for their hard work in reminding us to
be vigilant this CHRISTmas!
How dare Walmart try to be inclusive!!!!
You go boy!
IN-clusive would IN-clude Christians, dontcha think? Obviously,
Wal-Mart was not trying to be IN-clusive, but rather PC-stupid.
If christmas isn't a holiday - what is it?
And I wouldn't throw around that 'stupid' name if I were you.

What "ridiculous sanitising of the holiday season"?
Last year non-Christians had to put up with a barrage of idiots
telling them that the winter solstice celebration that all cultures
including Christianity have, was "really, for everybody" a Christian
festival. When if he had existed, his birthday would not have been
then.

From the Catholic League web site:
"Searches for Hanukkah and Kwanzaa direct customers to the Jewish and
African-American holiday sections, but searches for Christmas are directed
to the 'Holiday' section. Ergo, Wal-Mart discriminates in its
treatment of Christmas."
So, basically they are ***** that you don't get directed to a page
labeled "Christmas" when you search on "Christmas." Doesn't seem like a
big deal to me, but that's just me. I'm glad that Walmart will continue
to encourage it's employees to say "Happy Holidays", which is clearly more
inclusive than "Merry Christmas."

Point is, 'Christmas' was subtly removed and replaced with 'holiday',
while 'Kwanzaa' and 'Hanukka' remained. Why? Well, look at it this way:
Kwanzaa is an American invention dating from the late 1960's and with
all due respect, Hanukka is not the 'reason for the season' Christmas
is an almost 2000 year old traditional celebration of the birth of
Jesus, and is celebrated under that name by almost 85% of Americans.
So, for Wal-Mart to remove it, must be either bigotry or political
correctness gone stupid. Catholics have a right to express what they
don't like, and we don't have to shop at Wal-Mart if they don't like
us, either. So there. Nyah.

No, He wasn't born on Dec. 25th. Nobody sure of the EXACT date, but in
the ancient times the winter solstice was already a big deal with the
Pagans; and it seemed a good a time as any to commemerate His birth.

either. Jews do, but it has nothing to do with the solstice. That
leaves uh... Pagans? Is Wal-Mart pandering to Pagans? Oh my goodness!
What if they were? Why would that be a problem?
Well, YOU would doubtless have a problem if they pandered to
Christians... double standard? naw- really?
Um, they DO pander to christians. Almost every retailers does. Have you
forgotten already that you're in the majority? Funny how you're always
claiming persecution despite that little fact.
A majority? Gee, that makes Wal-Mart's original actions in this matter
look all the more ridiculous (or the actions of a few motivated by
bigotry and PC-stupidity)

Yes, the Winter Solstice. My winter holidays never had Jesus involved
and
they never will. Deal with it.
Methinks that if there were no Christianty, there would be no winter
holiday.
Methinks you're wrong.
What? An enlightened scientific secular/humanist/atheist society would
certainly not bother with ancient spiritual mumbo jumbo over what
amounts to simply the changing orientation of the Earth's tilted
rotation axes with respect to the sun, would it?
Maybe a few Pagans celebrating the solstice; but certainly not
a federal holiday.
If christianity wasn't around and Pagans were the majority, why do you think
they wouldn't have made the Solstice a federal holiday?
If the Pagans were a majority, we'd still be enjoying the benefits of
the dark ages.
So, do you set up that Pagan tree? Decorate with the colors green and
red?
Spruce up the living room with some holly and ivy? Hang up that Celtic
fertility symbol? (i.e., mistletoe) Cause if you do, you are celebrating
the Solstice - NOT Jesus.
Yes, we like those tradtions, and we know full well where they came
from.
LOL! A lot of you don't. Believe me, I know.
Well, yes, that's true. A lot of Christians would benefit from a little
education about the history of their own faith. (Y'know, that's a good
point- I mean, the Fundies get all in a tizzy over Catholics with our
statues and Rosaries, but then they go and plaster Pagan symbology all
over their houses at Christmas time... interesting.)
We add to them our own uniquely Christian ones, the creche,
adevnt candles, the vigil, the mass, and arguing with non-Christians
about what it all means.
Yes, it's a celebration of the Winter Solstice. Jesus, if he ever actually
lived, was born in the spring.
Early Christians were not concerned with birthdays (being a
self-centred occasion and all) But, by closely looking at the
Scriptures and other early sources and traditions, it can be postulated
that Jesus was born during the High Holy Days, probably closest to
Succot, which in 33 A.D. was in the early Autumn.

Hardly. Rome's fall was a long time coming... corruption, social decay,
economic collapse; if you want to blame the Christians, blame the
Christian Emperors for lacking the cold murderous determination of a
Caesar that may have delayed the inevitable. Try Gibbon's " The History
Of The Decline And Fall Of The Roman Empire" fascinating.
It was Christianity's society building, rigid adherence to morality and
social justice that pulled mankind out of the dark ages. Paganism, a
self-centred worship of mythological beings and nature forces would
hardly of been in a postion to do that.

No, He wasn't born on Dec. 25th. Nobody sure of the EXACT date, but in
the ancient times the winter solstice was already a big deal with the
Pagans; and it seemed a good a time as any to commemerate His birth.
Yes, goodness knows it was much easier, and less work, to hijack an
establish holiday than to murder those who celebrated it in its original
form.
All religions, cultures etc have a midwinter festival. Christianity
merely appropriated the Roman Saturnalia and pretended that was when
Jesus was born.
Muslims don't. Neither do Buddhists. Hindus aren't in a big hoopla
either. Jews do, but it has nothing to do with the solstice. That

It wouldn't be for you. The only thing you'd like more would be for
them to pander to Muslims.
In other words EVERYBODY has a winter solstice celebration, not just
Christians.
EVERYBODY being who?
Every other religion.
Just because you're angry over being wrong doesn't mean you need to
lie. The fraction of a percent of the population that don't celebrate
Christmas as a religious or secular holiday will have to deal with the
horrors of hearing "Merry Christmas" everywhere they go.
No matter how many stupid Christians insist that their pretend friend
is the reason for the season.
It's a stupid, falsehood turned cliche.
No, not a cliche, but an ancient tradition and solemn commemeration for
over a billion people worldwide; worthy of AT LEAST the same respect as
(with all due respect) Kwanzaa and secular/humanists/atheists who
appreciate a day off and the excuse to go to parties.
Yes, the Winter Solstice. My winter holidays never had Jesus involved and
they never will. Deal with it.
Yes, I'm guessing the only religious practice you participate in
involves bowing towards Mecca five times every day.
So, do you set up that Pagan tree? Decorate with the colors green and red?
Spruce up the living room with some holly and ivy? Hang up that Celtic
fertility symbol? (i.e., mistletoe) Cause if you do, you are celebrating
the Solstice - NOT Jesus.
Or the secular holiday that Christmas has become. Try not to cry.
