Catholic press attacks call for Pope to apologise to Templars
I read with interest the article in today's Catholic Herald about
calls for an apology for the persecution of the Templars. It appears
that the Catholic Herald does not recognise the case for an apology.
The article quotes three individuals, one academic and two authors,
who between them argue that the Templars ceased to exist and
"deserved" to be oppressed, therefore no apology is necessary. These
sentiments are echoed by the editorial inside the newspaper. The
implication would seem to be that the Vatican is wrong to be
"seriously considering" issuing an apology.
However, there remains a clear and legitimate case for an apology, and
I will now demonstrate. Firstly, we know that Vatican records
vindicate the Templars. Secondly, apologies have rightly and justly
been expressed by the Vatican over similar issues, setting a reliable
precedent. Finally, even if the Templars had been guilty of heresy,
nobody sane would dispute today that it is wrong to torture and burn
people alive under any circumstances.

The Catholic Herald (UK and Eire) describes a humble and polite
request for an apology as a "demand" and offers a defensive response,
"we do not need to apologise", as though Catholics are somehow under
attack which is manifestly not true.

Fortunately the only response that matters is the response from the
Vatican.

Well, gee, here in the United States we spent an entire election talking
about the war. The Vietnam war, that is.

Yup. It nicely distracted everyone from the war that's going on right
now.

I guess it worked so well that they thought it would be a good idea
if the distracted us all from the religious conflict in America with
some nonsense about what took place 700 years ago.

Not that "history" or "Facts" matter any (just ask maff), but just so
long as we all lose sleep over what we like to think happened
700 years ago -- instead of what is taking place right now -- than
it's worth it.

If it only happened in the past then you can 'let bygones be bygones'.
But the Vatican is still practicing terrorism even now. Then the whole
period is going to be re-examined and the victims and their estates
are going to be compensated. It's as simple as that.

The victims *and* their estates?
I would think it would only be the estates, if anything. Unless you know
of someone who is 700+ years old still walking around.

How would it be fair to pay of the "estate" of anyone killed 700 years
ago? Seems more like the typical Vatican practice of taking money from
the poor and giving it to the rich.

By leaving that "and" in there or even mentioning "victims" as a
category, you're still suggesting that there are victims to compensate.
There aren't. They've been dead for 700 years.
Of course it's all ridiculous. No one's going to awarded a settlement
for something that happened nearly a millennia ago.

Well. It depends on how many people are upset about it and still are.
