Object: Cheney shoots friend during hunting trip.
Accidentally shot a fellow hunter while quail hunting
(or maybe Quayle hunting, I only heard it). Attorney
General Alberto Gonzales is expected to argue that the
shooting is within the vice-president's powers.

As usual Earl does not quite get it.
Inadvertant:
1. Not duly attentive.
2. Marked by unintentional lack of care.
So an accident which happens under either definiton can frequently be
criminal and can always be civil cases.
If you have a duty to act "Not duly attentive" is a nice way to show you are
liable for what happened.

Yes, I can do no better than Ambrose Bierce at defining accident:
An inevitable occurrence due to the action of immutable natural laws.
When you have a shotgun, shooting birdshot, and discharge it while aimed
in the general direction of a hunting companion, they will be filled
with birdshot.

If you have a duty to act "Not duly attentive" is a nice way to show you are
liable for what happened.

Done.

I may hold some sympathy for any careless person, but I don't make
excuses for them. Why do you?

Of course not. He's a Shrubbie, you know..

Still, it was pretty embarrassing watching the pathetic lies that Scott
McClellan was telling yesterday about how it wasn't Cheney's fault. That
had to make every NRA member wonder what Scott had been smoking and
whether anyone would ever want to go hunting with someone who doesn't
think that the shooter bears any responsibility for what he did. Scott,
you did not do the President or the Vice-President any favors with that
blatant spin.
Yes, Whittington appears to have been contributorily negligent according
to the story we get now, but the Vice-President has no excuse whatsoever
for not knowing who is around him when he is hunting. If, as his answers
implied yesterday, McClellan doesn't know that basic of hunter safety,
he shouldn't ever be allowed in the same room as a weapon. Of course
Scott's 'explanation' for why the White House sat on the story did no
one any favors either.

Well.. This is the administration that can't admit mistakes, or take
responsibility, so it wasn't terribly surprising. They didn't need to
be so blatent about it, though..

What was the reason..? I've not managed to hear that part of it.
Though I suspect it was the "embersment" factor. They didn't want to
humiliate Cheney, too afraid of him having a heart attack....

What was the reason..? I've not managed to hear that part of it.
Though I suspect it was the "embersment" factor. They didn't want
to humiliate Cheney, too afraid of him having a heart attack....

Hey, the guy he shot just had one. Apparently some of the birdshot

Well.. This is the administration that can't admit mistakes, or take

Why do such a thing when you're not in the wrong?

Yes, Whittington appears to have been contributorily negligent according
to the story we get now, but the Vice-President has no excuse whatsoever
for not knowing who is around him when he is hunting. If, as his answers
implied yesterday, McClellan doesn't know that basic of hunter safety,
he shouldn't ever be allowed in the same room as a weapon. Of course
Scott's 'explanation' for why the White House sat on the story did no
one any favors either.

What was the reason..? I've not managed to hear that part of it.
Though I suspect it was the "embersment" factor. They didn't want to
humiliate Cheney, too afraid of him having a heart attack....

Then you deliberately ignored the reason. I understood perfectly.
