Cherry Mixmas |
This is cheesy as all get-out.
But my old computer gave up the ghost about a week ago, after a rather
longish period of email problems.
So I have a new one.
Which I have already managed to render unable to retrieve email.
That's the trouble when you hand a high tech thingy to a low tech me.
Install a little of this, a smidge of that -- and it all mingles with
what's already available to use properly, so that none of it works
well.
So I have to do the seasonal grinch thing here.
<grinch gripe grouse grumble...>
Now that I'm through griping, it occurred to me how beautifully human
it has been through history to celebrate this time of year. In the
longest nights, in the most bitter days, in the cold, on barren
fields, rises a chorus of defiant celebration; we celebrate both
memory and anticipation of warmth and abundance and light and life.
To all of you, a heartfelt wish for some peace and joy, wherever you
are.
Sunny

if you would be more specific about your computer problems some of us tech
minded people could probably help. Computers don't just give up the ghost.
Various parts may malfunction, but it's more often than not, a problem with
your software. If you surfed a lot your internet cache quickly fills up
with cookies and your computer may have trouble sending and receiving data.
If you have windows go to start setting control panel internet options,
internet options. In the middle of the box click on settings, then view
files. hit control-A to highlight all the files and then delete them all.

Oh, you helpful, wonderful person.
I'll keep that in mind for this computer.
But when I say the last one gave up the ghost, I wasn't kidding.
When the fellow who has done all our computer work for years says all
my
hardware is failing (motherboard, memory, and other stuff I just
forgot) and
that he can "fix" it, using as many used parts as possible, for $380,
but that he doesn't recommend it, I think it's gone. He's retrieved
my work and personal files from it to install on this one, and is
holding the dead one until I have a chance to think if there are other
things on there I want.

I heart my Mac. It gives my technology challenged self so few problems.

makes me wonder how far the patriot II act really went.

Says she to the man with feet that have been certified to ber no more than

its true & they should know.
As to the friends, have two left & that is still two more than many
people. Now people I like, there is a slew of them.
Fires in winter and plenty to eat,
Naw, a rock in the sun is enough for this old lobo. As to the grocerys, I
am still a bottomless pit. Avg. 3.5-5 lbs. of food a day. High metablism
I'm told. I still think it is the memory of pretty much staying hungry as
a kid, & that is a very long time ago.
Cool lemonade on a rock by the creek,
Long as my lemonade is at leaat 190 proof, sounds good. I suggest you use
straight lemonade.
And grandchildren's kisses on grizzly bear cheek :-)
Hell, they are ready to move out on their own, & at least two have. Where
does time go when you are busy living. Rather like that song, where are

It was not all that long ago I was using a Mac SE/30, and a Mac Quadra 630.
The Mac 8500 and 8600 came (and went on to good homes after getting nice
upgrades), but among the Macs I still own include working PowerBook 140,
SE/30.
I still take the SE/30 or the 140 when I have to go out of town, they may be
slower, but they still work at least as good as the day I got them.

Things have been going fantastic. I've taken a larger role in the

Flatline project completed, but time is difficult to find.

That sounds terrific. There's nothing like being busy and productive,
and it probably has good effect on your music, too. I know, on the
odd occasion the muse grabs me, I write better poetry when I just

My computer has been acting up too. I think it's time for an upgrade.
Thank you for the wishes and I hope that you have a wonderful holiday
and a great New Year!

My wonderful husband actually got me one for Christmas, before the
last one died, and then gave it to me early because he knew I was
fretting about needing to buy one after the holidays.
It's sort of nice, but it's kind of like driving a brand new car after
you've spent years accomodating the quirks of your old chunker.
Thank you for the wishes and I hope that you have a wonderful holiday
and a great New Year!
I sure hope you had one, too. As usual, mine was chaotic and
beautiful -- and I'm glad it's over and I can get some sleep.

I'll have to tell you what happened to the pastor at this Lutheran
church I attend. What happened to his XP computer... it wasn't pretty.

using XP
I met Bernie for lunch one Saturday last month, and he asked me to come
to his house and see about fixing his computer problems.
It was a Compaq, running XP. Well, if you could call it "running." I
could enter a command, like display statistics on the hard drive, walk
away for about ten minutes, then come back and see the window finally
pop up.
I pulled up the system monitor, and saw that the CPU usage was topped
out at 100%, but there was virtually no I/O activity. Nothing through
the network hookup, nothing from any disk.
It was obvious to me that some set of programs were conflicting in their
use of the computer's resources. I should mention here that Bernie had
had his computer for about 3 or 4 years, and had upgraded his OS from
Windows 98 to Windows ME to Windows XP. He had installed a firewall and
virus protection software just before the machine went haywire.
When it became obvious that the problem was with his software --
specifically his background stuff, I threw up my hands and recommended
that he call MS tech support. I showed him what he needed for the call
and what to tell them when he got started. I had neither the time nor
the knowledge to slog through the process of digging into his system
settings to iron out the conflict.
Later that night, at church, Bernie said that he had spent 5 hours with
tech support, and that they had gotten his computer back into good
operating shape. What they had done was walk him through the process of
finding all the software products that he had accumulated over the
years, the things that he had added on to run invisibly to help his
system, and toss all the old crap out. It seems he had at least a couple
of firewalls and three or four virus checkers. They were having a
battle-royal for the attention of the system, and it made for one
hellish afternoon for some tech-boy in California. {;-)
The moral of the story: Keep track of your software and toss out old
things before installing new ones, if at all possible.

Hi, chib.
I'm so glad you responded -- part of my train of thought was inspired
by memories of you writing about what you did for solstice
celebrations. The huge feasts you put together, the tree you planted,
the gifts for the boys and how you all decided not to be constrained
by convention and opened everything early. I love how you love life,
and very much appreciate your sharing it here. It's sort of
contagious :-)
I wish you *fifty more summers to grow your peppers and swim and go
fishing.

To you, too, Sunny.
I'm still having dumb little techie problems with my new computer
which I hope will finally be straightened out in the next couple
weeks.
