Ah! See how old I am? I read "The Song of Hiawatha" when I was a
mere sprout, lo, those many years ago, but had totally blanked on
"Chibiabos" until walksalone posted about him. Now I must go and re-
read the poem and refresh my memory.
This newsgroup is good for me in so many ways. :)

So the next time some nut theist claims that atheists want to be god,
we'll just agree and point at you. :-)
It might actually be interesting to try it, for some reason they don't
seem to be referring to that god.

Lisbeth.
I'm not sure where Walksalone got his information. As far a I know,
Chibiabos was not a god, Algonquin or otherwise. Perhaps Longfellow
dredged him up from some long forgotten Native American myth. But, in
Longfellow's poem, Chibiabos was not a god, he was a rather effeminate
Ojibwa brave who had a nice singing voice (whereas I can't sing a note)
and who died tragically, crossing a frozen lake and falling through the
ice (but his voice was so pretty that his songs could still be heard).
More to the point, I got my handle not from Longfellow but from Philip
Jose Farmer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philip_José_Farmer) and his
Hugo and Nebula award winning novella "Riders of the Purple Wage"
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riders_of_the_Purple_Wage), in which the
central character was Chibiabos Elgreco Winnegan, which is my full
online persona. The passage I quoted above was Chibiabos' "password"
for opening his "bedroom," such as it was.
I've been Chibiabos since 1968. All others are fakers and posers.
Including the gods.
In spite of all that, Longfellow rocks, generations of bored high
school students notwithstanding.

Poetry, that's not poetry. This is poetry.
I have no doubt at all the Devil grins,
As seas of ink I spatter.
Ye gods, forgive my "literary" sins --
The other kind don't matter.

Maybe not, there is much more to the myth of the peace bringer.

The only thing that you can learn from these posts, is what others have
believed, which can be interesting. Boring due to similarities, but
interesting.
It's when I screw up that I learn something, but emarassink it is.
