US judge gives approval to largest church abuse settlement

Burlington, USA, July 6 (AP) - A judge granted
preliminary approval today to America's largest
settlement in the church abuse scandal, authorizing a
USD120 million agreement between the Roman Catholic
Diocese of Covington and hundreds of victims of child-
molesting priests and other employees.
The decision by Judge John W. Potter makes immediately
available USD40 million from diocese assets. The victims
and the diocese are suing two insurance companies for the
remaining USD80 million.
Potter's ruling allows the church and the plaintiff's
lawyers to begin advertising the settlement and sets a
Nov. 10 deadline for claims to be filed.
"It's such a sensitive issue," plaintiff's attorney Stan
Chesley said. "It's the best way to know we have a
measure of justice."
The class-action suit was filed in 2003. It accuses the
church of a 50-year cover-up of sexual abuse by priests
and other employees.
Carrie Huff, an attorney for the diocese, described the
settlement as an amicable resolution. "We have come to
see the issues in the same way. It's hard to breathe a
sigh of relief under these circumstances, but I'm happy,"
she said.
It was unclear how many people are part of the class
action. The judge has ordered attorneys to determine the
exact number of victims who will come forward.
Victims would receive awards ranging from USD5,000 to
USD450,000, based on the severity of abuse. Those in the
highest category would be eligible to apply to a special
fund for extraordinary claims. A final hearing over the
settlement is scheduled for January 9.

The people in this article have no advantage over jay stevens,aka dr. jai
etc., who has been capitalizing on indian culture to sell his online
astrology services for years. He has invented an indian name, given
himself a fake academic degree, claims to be indian and to have lived
there; all of which are false. He is an american who has always lived
there, speaks no language of india except english, and started following
hinduism as an adult. As sent in an email:

it's interesting to consider how Indians are protecting their cultural
traditions against foreign infringement by patenting their traditional
knowledge, and incidentally protecting money-making opportunities
based on Indian spirituality. It's also ironic, considering the
business rationale behind patenting methods for the renunciation of
the material world."
