Object: Christian Civil Disobedience
They're disobeying the law in Montgomery over a chunk of rock. Forcing
the police to drag them away, forcing the authorities to search for an
out-of-town contractor to move the rock, praying day and night to get
God to change the minds of judges....
What gets me is this civil disobedience thing. As if they're like the
Blacks in the 50's or the Indians in the 1920's. The thing they don't
seem to realize is that you have to be genuinely oppressed before such
displays make any real impression on people. If there's one thing the
Southern WASP isn't in Alabama, it's "oppressed."
They are only kidding other fundy zealots... and doing a darn fine job
of that. But beyond that circle of people, I'll bet there's very little
sympathy or even interest. I hope the company that finally agrees to
move that chunk of rock drops it. I want to see those idiots get on the
ground and pray for *GAWD!* to put it back together for them.

No, once it is finally moved the constitution will have done it's job.
All your publicity is for naught once that occurs. It will just show
you fundies as the goons you are.

Yes, I, too, think that the publicity "has done its job". Immediately
after the Newdow case, everyone jumped on the bandwagon to decry the
godless atheist who wanted to remove the <cough> time-honored words
from the Pledge. Now after a year or so later, you hardly ever hear
about it anymore unless you listen to fundy radio stations.
Basically, the majority of the people don't care if the words "under
God®" are removed from the pledge despite the lip service paid to the
idea that God® should be part of a government ritual by all the
Congresscritters standing at attention on the Capitol steps.
It will be the same thing with the 10C monument. After the furor dies
down, everyone will forget about it. Life goes on. The one enduring
result will be that the publicity over its removal will have
highlighted the fanaticism of those who believe that God® somehow
rules the U.S. Just as in the civil rights movement, the ugly face of
those who want to enforce their own beliefs while they trample over
the rights of others will be exposed. It won't be an overnight
change, but it will be inevitable. Just as most citizens in the U.S.
now believe that members of all races deserve equal rights despite the
fanaticism of certain bigots, there will be a time in the not too
distant future when most citizens will believe that government
sponsored religion is wrong. I'm old enough to remember the "White
Only" signs, and I've seen them disappear. I have no doubt that the
"Fundy Only" symbols will disappear just as surely and within my
lifetime.

Yes, you know. Big heart-shaped cardboard thing with Barbie's face plastered
on
the front. You fill it with candy and prizes, hang it from a tree branch and
let the kids beat it with a stick until it bursts open - then all the kids
dive
on the candy ;)

In this case, the adult women were allowed to give Barbie a good beatin'
after
the kids got all the goodies. It was most invigorating ;)

I can understand the adult women taking part in the Barbie bashing,
but I thought that kids were supposed to like Barbie.
Now if were a Dubya pinata......:-)

They see it more than just a rock. The fundies see it as a way to
prove to themselves and God® that they are loyal soldiers in the war
against the evil that has overtaken this country, despite the fact
that the crime rate is the lowest it has been in 30 years.

They believe they are persecuted by the humanists, the secularists and
the atheists who won't let they perform their symbolic magic on
government property and at government expense. How much more
oppressed can one get than not having the government sponsor your God®
along with all the other gods that the government doesn't sponsor.

That will be an interesting question. If they move it to a cellar of the
building, away from public access, that's one thing. Maybe the janotirs
will pray at it.
I recall that the church across the street offered to take it in, but
Roy boy refused the offer. That might change now. I'll bet that church

If the church doesn't want it, I have another modest proposal. Perhaps
the good people of Montgomery might like a little European touch in
their fair city. What they need to do is move it out out to the
street. Build a partition around it. Put a little roof over it, and
with a few more modifications.....ta da!:

I think that it will be rather like the Pledge of Allegiance. No one
cares about saying the Pledge until the Court finds that two words are
unConstitutional. Once the monument is moved to a church or private
land, no one will make the effort to visit it. It will be old news.
In fact if the monument is moved, it will be evidence of the failure
of prayer.

On the other hand, if the momument is not removed, it could very well be
evidence of the nonexistence of God.
"Now it is such a bizarrely imporbable coincidence that anything so
mindbogglingly useful [as the Babel fish] could have evolved purely by chance
that some thinkers have chosen to see it as a final and clinching proof of
the nonexistence of God.
"The argument goes something like this: 'I refuse to prove that I exists,'
says God, 'for proof denies faith, and without faith I am nothing.'
"'But,' says Man, 'the Babel fish is a dead giveaway, isn't it? It could not
have evolved by chance. It rpoves you exist, and so therefore, by your own
arguments, you don't. QED.'
"'Oh dear,' says God. 'I hadn't thought of that,' and promptly vanishes in a
puff of logic."

When the monument is finally moved to a private space, how many, do
you think, of the fundy faithful will go and visit it and pray before
it?

Look at all the idiots that flocked to that smeared window at the hospital in
Boston. If they all went running to that mess (and any other smear and/or
tortilla chip that resembles Jesus or the virgin Mary), I'm sure they'll go a
running to the rock :P

But the rock doesn't look like Jesus. :)

Not to you maybe, but you are an atheist and therefore blinded by
Satan. Surely you can understand that.
You probably don't even believe that pigeon's blood cures leprosy.

...praying to change the minds of the judges. As if that would do any
good.

If one goes back and looks at some of the video clips of the civil
rights demonstrations in Mongomery, Selma, and other places in that
State during the '60s, these people are absolutely being treated with
kid gloves. They don't know what 'oppression' is. I wonder if any of
the older ones took part in the attacks on the marchers?

They are only kidding other fundy zealots... and doing a darn fine job
of that. But beyond that circle of people, I'll bet there's very little
sympathy or even interest. I hope the company that finally agrees to
move that chunk of rock drops it. I want to see those idiots get on the
ground and pray for *GAWD!* to put it back together for them.

It would be easier to remove if it were in little pieces. :-)

I offered to carpool with anyone willing to swing a sledge-hammer
before all the fundies encircled it. The offer stands if they ever go
home. There is a court order to remove it. It doesn't say it has to
be in one piece. :)

Wow - Bet that would be even more fun than beating up my daughter's Barbie
pinata at her birthday party last Saturday (after the kids had gotten out all
the candy and prizes, of course) :)
