'Shameful' to some is Nathan Sproul's 'badge of honor'

I thought that Nathan Sproul might be a little embarrassed by the news
coverage he and his company have been getting lately. But no, not at all.
Sproul is the president of the local political consulting firm Sproul &
Associates. He is the former head of the Arizona Republican Party and the
state's Christian Coalition. He has worked for a number of Arizona
politicians.
His company was paid about half a million dollars by the Republican
National
Committee to increase the party's overall voter registration rolls. The
tactics used by Sproul to accomplish this task have gotten a lot of the
attention. Much of it not good. That is, unless you speak with Sproul.
"Based on the comprehensive nature of the project," he said Monday, "the
complaints have been very isolated and have been a disagreement about
tactics. I think that what we did was legal. It was ethical. And I think it
was extremely productive."
Holly McCullough, the special assistant to the director at Carnegie Library
in Pittsburgh, disagrees with the "ethical" part. She told me that Sproul &
Associates asked last month if they could register voters at the library.
"They always said from the beginning they were Sproul & Associates and they
were representing America Votes, as if they had been hired by them," she
said. "But we got complaints from customers almost immediately at just
about
every location. A person would come in and say, 'Somebody out there asked
me
how I was going to vote.' "
McCullough researched America Votes and found out that it is nonpartisan
organization not affiliated with Sproul & Associates. Sproul told me that
he
didn't know that the name America Votes was taken and stopped using it when
he found out. Also, a canvasser for Sproul & Associates told the Pittsburgh
Post-Gazette, "We were told that if they wanted to register Democrat, that
there was no way we were to register them to vote. We were only to register
Republicans."
In Rosebud, Ore., the Associated Press quoted Douglas County Clerk Barbara
Nielsen as saying that she had received a complaint from voters who claimed
that canvassers working for Sproul & Associates told them that if they
didn't register as Republicans the canvassers wouldn't get paid.
A canvasser from Sproul & Associates told a reporter from the Internet
magazine Salon.com that she was supposed to ask potential voters which
presidential candidate they supported. If it was Sen. John Kerry, they were
to politely walk away.
Sproul filed a lawsuit against a former employee in Nevada who said that
he'd seen supervisors tearing up registration forms for Democrats.
Oregon's attorney general is looking into registration complaints in that
state.
News stories about all this have made a nasty election season even nastier,
with Democrats condemning Sproul's tactics.
"I consider it a badge of honor when I get attacked by Ted Kennedy and the
Democrat National Committee by name," Sproul said on Monday. "That tells me
that we were effective."
Holly McCullough, the librarian from Pittsburgh, has a slightly different
view. "Supporting a candidate is great," she said. "But we should want
everyone to vote. Using tricks or schemes in registration, that's kind of
shameful. I can't believe average people would appreciate that."
On the other hand, average politicians like it very much. "I have heard
from
every single one of my clients," Sproul told me. "(They) are very proud and
happy that my company was able to help the Republican Party in the way that
it did."

The correct word is TREASON. Have Fundamentalist Christians gone so
far into hatred and insanity that they accept treason as "godly?"

Newspeak my *****!
I still fail to understand why simply uttering the phrase "Christian
America" is not considered treason. Isn't treason when someone attempts
to overthrow the current political entity? Well, that's what is going on,
an attempt to overthrow the REAL United States of America and replace it
with a christian theocracy. When this current spate of evangelical
treason is put down, I hope that Falwell, Robertson, Swiggart, Buchannan,
Bush Sr., Bush Jr., and every other televangiot is still alive to face
prosecution for treason.

I only wish. The criminals of Iran-Contra didn't do a great amount of
prison time, themselves, let alone face treason charges. I doubt we'll be
seeing any prosecutions here, either.
Especially galling in the case of robertson, who has financial ties to
Charles Taylor, formerly the dictator of Liberia--who gave shelter to Al
Quaeda members shortly after 9/11.
