25 Percent Of Virginians Surveyed Report Sexual Assault As Children
(AP) - One-quarter of Virginians surveyed by the Virginia Department of
Health said they were sexually abused as children, according to a
report released Wednesday.
Twenty-seven percent of the women and 20 percent of the men said they
were victims of sexual assault during childhood, the health department
report said. More than half of the female victims and 39 percent of the
males said they were assaulted before age 13.
According to the survey, 43 percent of the perpetrators were family
members.
Only 10 percent of the victims reported the assaults to authorities.
The survey involved telephone interviews with 1,769 women and 705 men
conducted by Virginia Commonwealth University last year for state
health officials.
"We are working diligently to raise the public's awareness of the issue
and to train local human service providers to recognize and prevent
sexual violence and coercion,"
"This new information indicates that sexual assault of children in
Virginia continues to be a major public health concern," state Health
Commissioner Robert B. Stroube said in a statement.
He said health officials were working to raise public awareness
and to train human service providers to recognize sexual coercion and
violence.

You should realize that a good portion of people here in alt.atheism
never believe a survey like this unless we know the exact wording of
the survey questions and how scoring was conducted (y or no, scale
1-10, etc.).
If the question was "Have you ever felt, as a child, you were touched
inappropriately at some point (regardless of whether or not you view
it inappropriate now)" instead of "had you ever been fondled down
there" it makes a big difference.

Impact of Physical Abuse By Philip Greven. The more fundamental the religion
the more severe the sexual abuse.
