About 40 people from the group Save Our State and the Minutemen showed
up today to picket the state-sanctioned Day Laborers Hiring Center in
Laguna Beach!
With a goal of intimidating people from stopping to pick up and hire
workers, they had signs reading "Arrest the Employers".
When cars pulled into the hiring center, the protesters snuck up behind
the cars to take pictures of the drivers and license plates, and yelled
at the drivers to "hire Americans",
Fair enough.
Someone should have offered these boys as toop labor job picking fruit
on the spot.

I used to meet some nuts like that from time-to-time when I lived ther in a
cave just outside town in El Toro Canyon. Orange County people play weird
games.half of them seemed like faggots by the way. Also hosted the Manson
Family in my cave a couple of days, but we didn't really get along well.
Charlie wasn't there. Maybe already busted?

Sugar, what were you doin' livin' in a cave? I've always thought that

I lived in a cave because. I owned a 1961? Nash Rambler, and when the riots
broke out, in my home town after MLK was shot, I knew 2 young men who said
they wanted to go home to CA. Since I didn't want to hang around that dump
forever, I decided to drive them to CA. An easy rider I had the acquaintance
of, also from the west coast,-- an easy rider in the colloquial sense, not
like in the movie of that name, but a motorcycle pimp -- used to say, "This
place (Chattanooga) is a giant toilet. I don't want to be here when they
flush it." Unfortunately he was later (I heard) busted there for knocking
over a laundromat. I think all he was doing was trying to break into the
washers and dryers for change, but somehow they charged him for armed
robbery and sent him up for a few years.
He and his sidekick, another easy rider, rented a room below me in a house
where I stayed with a friend (I had no job or money). One time therewas a
debut of a new product, B & M Baked Beans. On all the doorknobs in the
neighorhood were hung little plastic bags with small sample cans of this
stuff. I went around and collected all the cans I could find and sometimes
when Bill was working on his motorcylce outside under my window, I would opn
it and say, "Hey, Bill" and drop a can of beans down to him. You see, being
an easy rider pimp, even if you have a regular old lady is not always
extremely lucrative, especially if a Harley is eating up your cash. Still,
he was doing better than the other easy rider who had no steady old lady.
This is just one example of the ambience of the area; there were of course
others.
When we got to California, after some mechanical type adventures with the
car, which were amusing, but I will spare those details for now, I and the
two other natives, not to be confused with the previous characters, but
rather decent young men, arrived in L.A. just after I got a ticket for going
85 on the freeway (in overdrive of course, downhill). I asked of them, "What
should I do now?" since we were about to go our separate ways. One
suggested, "Down near Laguna Beach are some caves. You could live there."
There were some interesting people I met in Laguna Beach, after I had been
living in my cave for a while, which was a few miles out of town, but better
than the local in-town caves, which were inhabited by rather odd characters.
You see, my suburban cave was more spacious and more peaceful than the urban
caves. There were also a number of people living out on the ground, since it
only rains in December.
One of the people I met was a former child movie actor, who worked in a gas
filling station, and whom I used to hitch into town and play chess with
while he was waiting for customers to drop in. A girl friend of his was
recently divorced, and had acquired from her ex-husband a 1954 Cadillac. She
was allowed only one parking space in her apartment complex, so she gave me
the car. After that, I lived in a cave and drove a Cadillac, so I didn't
have to hitch a ride to go into town and look for food or work. Eventually
by way of repayment, I gave her a very nice oil painting, that I got from
one of the spaced-out street people. It was a picture of some natives in
whatever country where they have the miniature deer, and it showed a scene
where they had killed one of those and were sitting and standing in front of
a grass hut or something. There was an adult, an adolescent and a child in
the picture all wearing their primitive native clothing.

Long and somewhat amusing story. It's 3 AM here and I have to go back to
bed. Will elucidate at a later moment.

There's been other news articles that mentioned the fact that the
day workers are picking up trash, performing demolition of hold
buildings, picking vegetables, cleaning offices in buildings, and
pretty much doing things that is long hours for less than minimum
wage -- things most Americans won't do.
So the argument is then one of forcing businesses to comply with
the labor laws -- which means that businesses raise their prices or
go out of business which also hurts the local economies.
Yep, not one of the rich white anti-illegal alien "protesters" have
ever gone a day hungry and not a one of them have ever had to check
into a homeless shelter or live in the street.

Subject: Racists in Laguna Beach
Hi everybody,
About 40 people from the group Save Our State and the Minutemen showed
up today to picket the state-sanctioned Day Laborers Hiring Center in
Laguna Beach!
With a goal of intimidating people from stopping to pick up and hire
workers, they had signs reading "Arrest the Employers".
When cars pulled into the hiring center, the protesters
snuck up behind the cars to take pictures of the drivers
and license plates, and yelled at the drivers to "hire
Americans", and they chanted "arrest the employers".
They also had signs that said "Illegals are criminals"
and "Go Home", and yelled that the immigrant workers
were "disease carriers" and "vermin". They came from
all over California, so it was a state-wide mobilization.
It was totally disgusting.
A group called Southern California Human Rights
Network (SCHRN), out of UC-Riverside organized
a counter-protest that had about 30 people. (I wish
that I could have put out a lot of calls to try to get more
people out- but I found out about the protest at about
9:30 on the night before! The protest started at 7:00
in the morning, so sorry if I wasn't able to call you! We
need to get a lot more organized for next time)
We were able to physically stop the racists from intimidating and
taking pictures of workers and people driving in to hire the workers
and to counter their chants. We out-yelled them with chants like
"Racists Go Home", "Immigrants are welcome",
"Work is a Human Right", etc. The vast majority of people driving by
showed support for our signs, like "Work is a Human Right", "Hire
Here", "Immigrants are Welcome" and "Queremos un Mundo sin Fronteras".
We were also able to talk a lot to the workers at the hiring center. I
think that it gave them confidence that our side was out there, and
they were helping us to shout down the racists and stop them from
taking pictures.
The people who worked for the hiring center were also very supportive
and glad that we were there. According to workers at the hiring
center, the
number of workers hired today was normal for a Saturday.
What we needed, however, was a MASSIVE number of people to numerically
drown out the racists and intimidate them from trying again.
We need to get a network of people who can
respond to this stuff at the last minute. The Minutemen have also
announced plans to come to California in August.
We CAN'T allow this to happen in our backyard. These guys are
emboldened by what just happened in Arizona, and we have to stop it
from going unchallenged here. Like I said, the group that organized
the protest was Southern California
Human Rights Network at UC Riverside. They're organizing a conference
on May 28th to talk about what to do.
Their contact info is below. We also need to be ready to respond if
they try to go to the hiring center again (apparently this was the 3rd
time they had been there! But they don't usually go two weeks in a
row.)
Hopefully we can organize a network here in LA of people who are
interested in responding.
What do people think?
P.S. Below are two things: a link to the article from the LA Times
that talks about the Minutemen coming in August, and the article about
today's protest that I wrote up for Socialist Worker.
