Capill faces new sex claims

Disgraced former Christian political party leader Graham
Capill is facing the prospect of further sex abuse
charges.
Two Christchurch women have told police they were
molested by Capill, former leader of the Christian
Heritage Party.
Capill quit politics two years ago to join police as a
111 communicator, before becoming a prosecutor.
Last month he found himself on the other side of the
dock, admitting he had indecently assaulted an eight-
year-old girl.
Capill was freed on bail and is due to be sentenced in
Christchurch District Court today.
Police now plan to seek a remand to allow inquiries into
the fresh allegations to continue.
"I can confirm that we are considering other
information," Detective Sergeant Chris Power, the officer
in charge of the inquiry, said last night. "But with it
being a very high-profile case, I am reluctant to say
anything at this stage."
Capill has been interviewed by police about the new
allegations.
Lawyer Jonathan Eaton, who acts for Capill, said Capill
was "anxious to have matters resolved as soon as
possible". Any further comment was inappropriate, Mr
Eaton said.
That was also the tack yesterday from Anglican vicar
Wally Behan, who, along with his wife, Rosemary, has been
supporting the two women.
"I'm reluctant to talk, I guess because of the delicate
place that we're at and because of our involvement with
the (women)," he said. "I don't want to inflame
anything."
The Behans lead St John's Church in central Christchurch.
Capill and his wife, Judy, worshipped at the church for
about 10 years before leaving last winter.

abuse allegations to police in February, after Mrs Behan
was approached by a distressed parishioner.
On April 1, fighting back tears, Capill pleaded guilty to
one representative charge of indecently assaulting the
girl in the year leading up to November 2002. In that
year Capill, as the family-friendly face of Christian
Heritage, denounced the "evil" scourge of child abuse.
Capill resigned from the police on April 4, having been
suspended from duties pending the outcome of the case.
Mrs Capill is understood to be standing by him. The
