Former principal receives 20 years for sex crimes

Sarasota - A former pastor and principal of a Christian
school in Sarasota was sentenced to 20 years in state
prison for raping and molesting a former student.

The Rev. Jerry Lee Pitts, 39, of North Port, was
convicted in January of lewd and lascivious battery and
lewd and lascivious molestation on a then-15-year-old
student.

Twelfth Judicial Circuit Judge Andrew Owens handed down
the sentence in late April.

Two other former students testified that Pitts also raped
and molested them when they were about the same age as
the victim, but they never reported it to the police.
Both are now in their mid-20s. Because the statute of
limitations ran out on their cases, they could only
testify to show a pattern of behavior by the defendant.

The victim told jurors Pitts had started a sexual
relationship with her when she attended the now defunct
Living Water Academy in Sarasota. The teen told the court
that not long after she started attending the school in
March 2002, Pitts sexually assaulted her in his wife's
office, in an RV trailer parked on school grounds and in
the computer lab.

Following Pitts jail term, he will be placed on 10 years
sex offender probation and will have to register as a sex
offender with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
