If you have a broadband account, give me a heads-up here, and I'll run
over and post it to alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.prog. I use the handle
"vicman" there. If you like it, then buy the CD. ;-)

Ok, shoot. I subscribed and cleared it out.

Thanks!

OK, thanks a million, this is really good stuff. I'm glad I had some time
at work today to stick this on the 'phones.
This looks like my CD purchase for the week! I wish I had run across these

Not always true. If you like Symphonic Prog, try Spock's Beard's "Snow".
It's a Prog-rock opera like "Tommy", but based on a kid preacher with
divine powers. The story is BS, but the music is great.

I downloaded some music by Spock's Beard. What a snore.

The "V" album is good, as is "The Light". If you can find "The Light",

1. She Has Funny Cars (Balin/Kaukonen)
2. Somebody to Love (Slick/Slick)
3. My Best Friend (Spence)
4. Today (Balin/Kantner)
5. Comin' Back to Me (Balin)
6. 3/5 of a Mile in 10 Seconds (Balin)

8. How Do You Feel
9. Embryonic Journey (Kaukonen) (str.)
10. White Rabbit (Slick) (TRADUZIONE)
11. Plastic Fantastic Lover (Balin)
The Grace Slick songs are without a doubt the most famous--Somebody to
Love and White Rabbit (from which the book "Go Ask Alice" got its
name). Great balance on the album, not really a weak song in the
bunch, and a lot of creative energy.
Of course, they were all taking a shitload of drugs and Grace Slick I
think remarked later that she was surprised to have survived it.
I've also heard (from those who were alive at the time) that Grace
Slick was an invited guest to Nixon's daughter's wedding. Miss Manners
(Judith ?) crashed the party.

I'm a prog junkie as well as a classical junky. Gimme some Yes or
Kansas, follow it with some Richard Strauss or Bela Bartok and I'm happy.
Another good prog group is The Flower Kings. Pretty "out there"... and
I've heard some xian themes in their work too. "Yes" is also very
spiritual.

Well, I don't think so entirely. I don't like pretty much any of the
"evangelcal" Christian music I've ever heard. The "hardcore" christian
rocks with the big shows to convert teenagers Seems like they are using
Jesus as a justifcation for their music. "Our music is good becuase it
is about Jesus." menatality, even if it is bland and unoriginal. These
acts seem to be more in it for the popularity then anything.
However, there are also the Christian rock artists who don't come out
saying "We are Christian rock." These are the acts to look for, the
ones that don't go out on the Jesus-tours or get filed away under the
"Christian" section of the music store. They use their religion to
inspire their music, not be the center of it. The first album by Visual
Audi Sensory Theater was one like this, while being based heavily on
the artist's faith, doesn't come across as being about it. There are
many great songs that I've fallen in love with from that album, and
others like it, even if they are "Christian Rock." They are
metaphorical enough that I can easily interpret them to meanings that
mean something to me. (I suppose, being in the Christian spirit, just
like how the Bible is handled.)

I always liked The Electric Prunes, a Sixties psychedelic band that
sometimes had religious themes in their music. They did a
psychedeliciized version of the Latin mass. The "Kyrie" was featured in
the "Easy Rider" movie.

Man, that's a group who's name I haven't heard in eons. They had a
cut, or two, make it big I can't recall the name(s) of.

Here's their discography. I think it was mostly their singles that were
successful.

Ah. Ta.
"I had too much to dream (last night)" is readily recognizable.

You can hear some cool psychedelic stuff on the Techicolor Web of
Sound. I ripped a lot of stuff off that stream but I'm not sure if this
can still be done.

(For those with Macs, this is a pre-set "Radio Tuner" station under the
"Classic Rock" category with iTunes. I don't know about the PC version)

Got some reading to do to have it do more than just read and play the
current selection.

The Ramones did a cover of it, but I think the original is better.

All you can do is listen to one song at at time, but you can download
songs from the stream as they come in. Streamripper works with WinAmp
to download songs. I usually just let it run for a day or two and then
see what I've got out of it. A lot of songs wil come out fine, but
others will be missing the beginning or end of the song, so it's a
mixed bag. The whole collection is like 10gb, so it would take you a
week or so to download it all.

The OS X version is stand-alone, and way easier to use.

I'm now picking up and listening to the stream as it comes in.
