Christians and Muslims |
I've been lurkin' here for several years. On and off poster.
I've learned more about religion here than I ever expected to.
Many surprising tidbit, usually about Christianity.
Some positive some negative, if you've been here long, you know the
drill.
I like this forum for info because the debates often give multiple
perspective of an issue.
But I know very little about Islam. So help an ignorant atheist out.
I've been lurkin' at alt.religion.islam on occation but I'd like to get
the perspective of other atheists.
What do you know about Islam?
Any good links for general information?
Thanks, Peter

What do you know about Islam?
That it makes Christianity look enlightened.

You might look up a searchable online Quran to start with.
And google up some of the critical anotated Qurans from
atheists sites.
Its hard to find good info on the net.
The one old and Moslem biography
on Mohammed, Ibn Ishaq "Life of Mohammed"
is not on line.
There are some ugly things in there.
One might I suppose go to a bookstore and buy
a good history of Islam from a reputable publisher
like Oxford Press to start with.
Unfortunately full histories of Islam are hard
to come by.
There is a book called Jihad in the West
that tells a lot of stuff that even most
Moslems do not know about.
The South coast of France was invaded by Moslems
centuries ago who cut of Rome from most of France
for 80 years until Holy Roman emperor Otto III
held a crusade to defeat them and push them out.
Few people know the full nastiness of jihad from
Islam until defeat of the Turks at Russian hands.
Then you have the hadiths. Collections of sayings
and doings of Mohammed outside of the Quran.
Many also bad and nasty. Many also false.
Not all Moslems accept the hadiths, especially
the more disreputable collections.
Much madness comes from the hadiths, the banning
of music by the Taliban was based on hadith.
A lot of Islamic extremist craziness is hadith based.
But its a rich enough subject that you will not
easily become familar with it in any big hurry.
I'd say google for quran, objectionable verses
to start with. And get a basic history book.
Early Islam could be rather progressive because it was filled
with nominal moslems who did not accept much of the
Quran. This all died out in the 1300's with al Ghazali
who asserted philosophy was wrong and useless and
opened the gate to the take over by religionists
that dominates til this day.
Here science, progressivness, critical thinking
and technology in Islamic lands died.
Europe was having its own big changes and
the West did not really have much to do with
Islam except fighting the Turks.
Islam except for the Turks, had little to do with
the West except raiding ships from Algeria and Triopli
until Napolean kicked in the doors of Egypt in 1798.
In 1200 the Turks started their empire. That is
another aspect to all of this that is a complex
subject all in itself.
And google wahabi, deobandi for the start of the
todays radical islamicists.

While you ought to take anything you read at the Wikipedia with a grain
of salt, the tendency is for things to be largely correct with subtle
errors (intentional or otherwise). So while it's not authoritative,
it'll give you a decent overview.
