Christians are against abortion, but their president is againstchildren's healthcare |
What's the higher moral ground of those who want a child to be born
only to suffer? Well, that is the case when the president they put in
power vetoed for the second time healthcare coverage for poor kids.
I guess they are taking a hint from God, MAKE HUMAN BEINGS... TO MAKE
THEM SUFFER. :(
Bush vetoes kids health insurance bill
WASHINGTON - President Bush vetoed legislation Wednesday that would
have expanded government-provided health insurance for children, his
second slap-down of a bipartisan effort in Congress to dramatically
increase funding for the popular program.
It was Bush's seventh veto in seven years -- all but one coming since
Democrats took control of Congress in January. Wednesday was the
deadline for Bush to act or let the bill become law. The president
also vetoed an earlier, similar bill expanding the health insurance
program.
Bush vetoed the bill in private.
In a statement notifying Congress of his decision, Bush said the bill
was unacceptable because -- like the first one -- it allows adults into
the program, would cover people in families with incomes above the
U.S. median and raises taxes.

First of all, not all Christians are against abortion. Second, that
veto was because of all the pork attached to it.

If that latter were the case, then every bill passed in the last
seven years would have been vetoed.
Attachments are how most work gets done in Congress. Dubya might
as well claimed to be vetoing it because it was printed in English.

You're right, it does seem odd that fiscal responsibility has come up
now. But hey, better late than never.

These "attachments" are what's going to keep our grandkids in debt.
It's a practice of politicians on both sides of the aisle.

Oh, absolutely. As I say, it's the way that most Congressional
work gets done -- for better, and for worse.
But I think it's the few-hundred-billion-here, few-hundred-billion-
there war in Iraq deficit which is going to weigh down our
kids. After all, attachments and entitlements have been
around forever -- and less than a decade ago, we actually
had, nota deficit, but a surplus going.

Actually, there was never a surplus. When they replaced the
social secutity trust fund with IOUs, they created a paper surplus.
Again, both sides of the aisle contrived this.

Their acts and statements seem be

Here I thought that they tried to hide their intent but their actions
betrayed it. I generally believe what people do rather than what they
say when their claims and actions conflict.

My understanding is that the bill ups the income level of entitlement.
There are legitimate rational arguments for not doing this. There's
certainly a case to be made for such a program, but to aver that only
having some brief against kids could be the motive for the veto, is
just silly.
One legitimate reason for objecting to expanding the program to higher
income families is that there would be less to go around for the
poorest. Whether that reason holds up to scrutiny, I don't know. One
would have to examine the scope of entitlement before and after the
proposed bill, and consider the budgeted amounts before and proposed
after.
The reason I cited just this particular rational is that it
demonstrates how counter-intuitive rational consideration of
rationales can be. Things are not always as they seem -- which should
motivate some reticence.

The bill allowed states to make certain decisions. Remember when
Republicans thought it was a good idea for states to decide? George Bush
doesn't care if children die. He thinks that they can all get emergency
room care. He believes many other things that are not true, either.
