Harvard U. Investigating Alleged Gay Beating

Harvard University and Cambridge, Mass., police are investigating a
possible hate crime after an openly gay student was allegedly attacked.
Galo Garcia said he was walking down Bow Street Friday night when a
driver passing by started calling him and his friend names. Garcia
confronted the driver, who then allegedly punched and beat Garcia.
NewsCenter 5's Gail Huff reported that Garcia received cuts, bruises
and a concussion. He and a male friend were on their way to a party at
Adams House on the Harvard campus, where many gay and lesbian students
live, when the attack occurred.
Garcia told the Harvard Crimson newspaper, "All I really remember is a
blur of punches and that I was thrown against the wall."
Garcia claims he was verbally and then physcially assaulted by two men
who yelling derogatory slurs at him as he walked with his arm around
another man.
"It definitely saddened me and it definitely made, I think, everybody
who's a member of our community feel less safe,"
Monday night, other students expressed concern over the incident.
"I live right here and it's scary to think relaly close to where I
live," said student Mika Morse.
Police questioned two men allegedly involved in the attack. Neither are
Harvard students. No arrests were made at the scene, but the case is
still under investigation as a possible hate crime.
This is the first reported account of a hate crime on campus this year.
Students from the Gay and Lesbian Students Association have scheduled a
rally at noon in front of Science Center to protest hate crimes.
