Ready or not, security targets kids
By James Janega
Tribune staff reporter
Touting a 21st Century version of "duck and cover," the Advertising
Council and Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff on Thursday
opened a national effort in Chicago to prepare children for natural
disasters and terrorist attacks, then trotted out the mountain lion
mascot they hope will drive the message home.
The government wants children and their parents to do three things to
be prepared:
Have an emergency kit ready, a disaster plan in hand and an awareness
of the dangers that can become emergencies, including terrorism.
The program is called "Ready Kids," and joins homeland security
programs for families and businesses already in place.
The spokeslion is Rex, a muscled, bandana-wearing mountain cat dressed
in what looks to be a cross between safari clothes and lederhosen.
Homeland security hopes Rex will join Smokey Bear and McGruff the
Crime Dog in children's consciousness.

"The power of the Executive to cast a man into prison without formulating
any charge known to the law, and particularly to deny him the judgement of
his peers, is in the highest degree odious and is the foundation of all
totalitarian government whether Nazi or Communist." -- W. Churchill, Nov
21, 1943 (Or whether Christofascist Republican.)

Shakespeare's Sister posts a pic and sez:
"Boy, he looks familiar.
"I think a friend of mine might have hooked up with him at Gay Pride a
couple of years ago."
