How can it be true when it's based on a false assumption?
The First Amendment doesn't say "Freedom of Speech if you served in
Vietnam".
This country is founded on the principles of *civilian* leadership and
*civilian* control of the military. We aren't run by a military junta.
There is no military service requirement to run for office, and there is
certainly no military service requirement to hold an opinion.

Oh, sure. But can't you understand the frustration of a man who was
paralyzed in the service of his country, a man who was a decorated
battlefield leader being lectured on military strategy by someone that
avoided the same calling, a man who's own patriotism was questioned during a
sleaze campaign?
Cheney is a broken record always conflating Iraq and al-Qaeda. Cleland calls

None of that is relevant to anything. It's just a personal attack on
***** "Boogeyman" Cheney.
Cheney is a broken record always conflating Iraq and al-Qaeda. Cleland
calls him on it.
That isn't relevant either. Cleland said nothing of substance, he just
pushed all the buttons for all his leftwing pals.

I would like to see the dems counter the argument that a deadline lets
the enemy wait us out, for the defeatist point of view that it is.
They're admitting that they have no plan for victory and that victory
isn't even possible with the current course of action. The best we
can accomplish is to be on the ground and slow down the inevitable
shift of control over to the insurgents. Most of which are Iraqi
citizens.

the enemy wait us out, for the defeatist point of view that it is.
They're admitting that they have no plan for victory and that victory
isn't even possible with the current course of action.
That simply is not true. In fact it is the exact opposite of what will
happen.
A deadline would mean that the "insurgents" would have nothing to lose
by waiting and avoiding our offensives. Any ground we might take, they
could take back as soon as our deadline passed and we left.
Unless we set the "deadline" far enough into the future that the free
Iraqis on the ground there would be able to count on us to be there
while they rebuild their defenses, but that would be way too far into
the future for your impatient defeatist Democrats. President wannabee
Hillary wants us outta there before she takes office (as if!).
On the other hand, without such an artificial endpoint, we can take
territory from the *terrorists* and hold it, and they cannot know that
they'll be able to take it back at a certain time in the future. Once we
take a city away from them, the people who live there will enjoy their
freedom under our protection, and those free Iraqis will put up their
own defenses which will make it much harder for the *terrorists* to move
back in. And *that* will enable us to move out in due time. But that
time frame is longer than the "deadlines" that your deafeatist Democrats
want to set.
The best we
can accomplish is to be on the ground and slow down the inevitable
shift of control over to the insurgents. Most of which are Iraqi
citizens.
It's not inevitable. There are far more Iraqi civilians who are *not*
insurgents.

I would like to see a con explain to me why the insurgents, if they're so

and wait until Bush declares victory...again.

Geoff, did you read my answer to that argument? The military action is
required to *enable* those diplomatic, economic and political means to
succeed. Without the military action, the only thing you get from the
others is foot-dragging while the enemy exploits our absense.

I would like to see the dems counter the argument that a deadline lets
the enemy wait us out, for the defeatist point of view that it is.
Which enemy??? Most of the fighting is between and among Islamist
groups. The US military is a sideshow. The fanatics who are there to
kill us might just lose their momentum if we announced a timetable for
withdrawl. Why blow yourself up when the infidel is getting ready to
leave? Why go to the trouble and danger of assembling an IED if the
GIs are packing up?
They're admitting that they have no plan for victory and that victory
isn't even possible with the current course of action.
The administration hasn't the slightest idea of what it can do to
achieve "victory" (whatever that means), and our current course of
action certainly won't do it.
The best we
can accomplish is to be on the ground and slow down the inevitable
shift of control over to the insurgents. Most of which are Iraqi

Maybe if we do pack up, the Iraq government will begin to step up and
take control. Right now, only a portion of the Capital is under
governmental control. Their record has been miserable. Maybe they'll
get less miserable if they don't have us as a crutch.
