Given that some Christians regularly swoon at the thought of

objections to other culture's rituals has much standing.

I blogged this article myself, at
http://biffster.org/thoughts/2005/04/colorado-republican-representatives.html.
My final argument: the Republican reps who were pushing this ban succeeded
in making themselves look like asses. And Democratic representative Angie
Paccione summed the whole thing up with a greatquote: "'Come on Jim. It's
not the same, it's not the same to have someone marry a dog than it is to
have two loving people get married,' she said."

(Denver, Colorado) Two Colorado lawmakers got into a shouting match
when one of them marched into a news conference the other was holding to
denounce same-sex marriage.
Rep. Kevin Lundberg (R-Berthoud) and Rep. Jim Welker (R-Loveland)
called the news conference to tout their proposed amendment to bar gays
and lesbian from marrying.
Colorado already has legislation that blocks same-sex marriage. But,
Lundberg said that it could be overturned by judges. Lundberg called it
"the most significant domestic issue of the decade."
At that point, Rep. Angie Paccione (D-Fort Collins) had enough. "We
have over 700,000 Coloradans without health care," she said, her voice
rising, she yelled as she marched up the podium.
"How could we possibly say that gay marriage is more important than
health care?"
Paccione, who is half black, also reminded him that interracial marriage
used to be illegal in Colorado. She said denying gay people the right to
marry is no different.
Lundberg argued that they were two different issues.
Welker then interjected saying that gay marriage would open a "Pandora's
box".
"Where do you draw the line?" he said. "A year and a half ago a lady in
India married her dog."
Welker was referring to the marriage of a 9-year-old girl who married a
stray dog in 2003 as part of a ritual to ward off an evil spell.
"Oh, for heaven's sake," Paccione shot back. "Come, on Jim."
"That is true. That's a fact," Welker said.
It was enough to make Paccione explode with rage.
"It's not the same to have somebody marry a dog than it is to have two
loving people get married. Come on!"
Most observers believe the marriage amendment is unlikely to pass. Last
year, Lundberg failed to get a majority of members in the
Republican-controlled House to back GOP Rep. Marilyn Musgrave's proposed
gay marriage amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

I think that there's something terribly wrong with America
when an issue like gay marriage can be used as a smokescreen to
divert attention from the USA's embarrassing failures regarding
health care. It's even worse when the truth is that the truth
sinks in that gay marriage, at least the forms currently being
argued about, actually represents the gay movement taking
a quite *conservative* tack on trying to fit into this society.

Marriage itself is a major contributor to sexual divergence. Limiting
sexual partners to just one person for a lifetime is not a natural
thing for humans, IMHO.
The solution is to remove the term "marriage" from government entirely.
We can use a new term like "adolescent guardian partnership" or
something similar for tax purposes, social benefits, etc. When the
theist affiliation is removed we will be closer to the time when we can
talk about the real issues of partnerships/child guardianships.

I concur completely. When so many heterosexual marriages
end up in a frequently messy dissolution, is marriage--at
least the nuclear family flavor---something that gays
should be wanting to ape? I support gay marriage for anyone
who wants it, sure, but resorting to this seems a terrible
failure of the imagination, and it also shows how terribly
*conservative* the gay rights movement has become.
As for child guardianships, I say let empower the kids to
make the decisions of which "family" members they want to
live with, and direct the benefits there. Much of the
child abuse in this country stems from the fact that we
refuse to recognize that making children and raising them
require two different sets of skills, we try to *force* those
who aren't interested or who otherwise aren't fit to raise
kids to be child caretakers; in fact, we grant them near-
dictatorship powers over the kids just on the basis of who
fucked whom one night. It's silly.

Amen to that. I've proposed that idea as an alternative, along the lines,
"If we will not allow any two people to marry, then we should remove
marriage for everyone. Let churches "marry" whoever they want. The
government will recognize civil unions between two people (regardless of
gender) and give spousal rights to the members of the union."
It's a good compromise: the closed-minded religious fundies get to keep
marriage "sacred," religions that accept gays can marry gay couples, and
everyone is treated equally under the law.

There's one very big deal: our government doesn't view all marriages as
equal. Sure, a church might marry a gay couple, but most state governments
don't recognize that union. Which means the couple doesn't get the rights
given to hetero married couples.
The whole idea is to create union equality.

jealous rage. It is tantamount to a bunch of hearing impaired people getting
upset and demanding that they get handicap parking spaces.
The homosexual community has come up with so many different versions of why
two people of the same sex should be allowed to marry that no one really
gives them any respect for their position anymore. First it was love, then
it was benefits, then it was equality and here it is again, back to
benefits. If it's for love, get married, no one is stopping you. If it is
for benefits, show the need and make the case. If it's for equality, show
the void and be prepared to prove the point with something other than
opinion, name calling and tantrums.

Hmmm... "ranted" is a personal affront?
Sounds more like you didn't have anything to answer my arguments with.

Amen to that. I've proposed that idea as an alternative, along the

They already do. Anyone that wishes can get married. So what's the big
deal?

There's one very big deal: our government doesn't view all marriages as
equal. Sure, a church might marry a gay couple, but most state governments
don't recognize that union. Which means the couple doesn't get the rights
given to hetero married couples.

So the problem is not with marriage,

Yes, it is.

it's with government benefits. Instead
of engaging in an antagonistic war about marriage, why not go to bat for
benefits based on the merits of the need?

Why not settle for second class citizenship yourself, see how
you like it.

equal. Sure, a church might marry a gay couple, but most state governments
don't recognize that union. Which means the couple doesn't get the rights
given to hetero married couples.

So the problem is not with marriage, it's with government benefits.

Benefits (and obligations) provided by marriage, i.e. it is about
marriage.
Instead

of engaging in an antagonistic war about marriage, why not go to bat for
benefits based on the merits of the need? It appears it is just a case of
jealous rage. It is tantamount to a bunch of hearing impaired people getting
upset and demanding that they get handicap parking spaces.

No, it is demanding a right granted to all other citizens.

The homosexual community has come up with so many different versions of why
two people of the same sex should be allowed to marry that no one really
gives them any respect for their position anymore. First it was love, then
it was benefits, then it was equality and here it is again, back to
benefits. If it's for love, get married, no one is stopping you.

Marriage is a legal contract.
If it is

for benefits, show the need and make the case. If it's for equality, show
the void and be prepared to prove the point with something other than
opinion, name calling and tantrums.

It is for benefits available to all other citizens, which makes it a
question of equality.
