Object: Columnist asks: Witch way to prison?
From the article:
-----------------------------------------------------------
Fascinating news: wicca priests and priestesses are to be chaplains in
our prisons. Just like representatives of Christianity, Judaism, Islam
and other faiths, Canadian law and the Canadian Charter will give
witches full access to our incarcerated criminals.
One can only hope they won't be teaching them how to make the cell
doors disappear or the warders invisible.
Knowing that every good Canadian would delight in this
oh-so-progressive adventure, one the public will have to pay for of
course, I thought a trip to the Pagan Federation Web site might be in
order. What fun it turned out to be. The organization represents
witches, druids, goddess worshippers and various others. As for Satan,
visitors to the site are given an essay praising satanism and
providing a link to the Church of Satan Web site.

Coren offers up a generous helping of irony, which is not at all
uncommon when Christians express an opinion. He starts out with some
tongue in cheek humour about pagans. Poking fun at other people's ideas
about the supernatural seems quite acceptable to him, although he is a
professed Christian with fairly strong convictions who worships a magic
spook.
His use of humour doesn't really disguise his contempt, however, and he
finally drops the sparring gloves. He states: "While nobody would allege
that all pagans break the law, people proudly calling themselves pagans
have been involved in child abuse circles and grotesque dark cults." No
mention made of the many centuries of abuses perpetrated by the various
followers of the god of Abraham, sometimes in the name of their deity.
It's characteristic Coren, and the usual helping of Christian arrogance.

Josef

His [Coren's] use of humour doesn't really disguise his contempt,

Couple of points
1. Most of the 'satanic child abuse' claims have either proven to be
false or are highly suspect (probably a bit like 'blood libel' in the
Middle Ages).
2. Wisconsin already has a prison chaplain, Jamyi Witch, who is a
Wicca (hired Dec 2001). Other than some screams from some politicians
and conservative groups there seems to have been no problem.

Or that many "people proudly calling themselves" Christians "have been
involved in child abuse circles and grotesque dark cults".

One can only hope they won't be teaching them that once they've
accepted Jesus they're no longer guilty. The appeals would gum up the
courts for years!

Christian evangelicals and nobody else. Visitors to the site are
given exercises in influencing the political processes, polemics on
why defending murderous dictators can be considered a moral good, and
screeds on why Christians should run our institutions and everyone
else should be a second-class citizen.
