Comcast DVR sucks *****! |
Listen to me. This is important:
If you have the choice between a Comcast DVR or Tivo,
get the Tivo. Seriously. You're a neo-con if you don't.
Now we have Tivo, or at least we did, but my room mate
wanted to be able to record two things at once, or record
one thing while watching another. This would require another
cable box. Anyhow, he figured if a new cable box was
required, might as well get the Comcast DVR -- with it's two
built-in cable receivers -- instead of a second cable box.
It made sense at the time. After all, there's only one box
now where there used to be two (cable plus Tivo), and
there would have been three. But what looks good on paper
very often turns out to be a huge steaming load of ***** in
real life...
So what's wrong with the Comcast DVR? Where do I start?
Right now I've got on a Star Trek episode I recorded earlier.
There's no sound. What makes me think the fault lies with
Comcast and not the cable channel?
The fact that none of the DVR controls are working. I mean,
sure, if I hit pause the little pause symbol shows up on the
screen, but the show doesn't actually pause. And the same
is true for the fast-forward, rewind & the 30-second back
button.
But only for this show. The sound & controls work just find
for everything else on the DVR, and there lies the problem:
The fucking worthless piece of ***** makes up it's own rules!
Constantly.
For example, we always recorded The Daily Show, so we
set up a "series recording." And, yeah, that means it
frequently records the 11pm episode of The Daily Show,
plus all the repeats starting at 1am.
A number of times I went into the menu to shut off these
repeat recordings, only to discover that it wasn't scheduled
to record them. So I thought everything was fine, until later
that day when the DVR changed it's mind and decided that
the repeats where in fact scheduled to be recorded...
A number of other times I went into the menu to shut off the
repeats, found the repeats weren't scheduled to be recorded,
and (surprise, surprise) they didn't record.
Still other times I went into the menu to shut off the repeats
and the Tivo decided to fight with me. I'd shut off the midnight
repeat of Olbermann, for example, so the Comcast DVR would
get mad and turn back on the 4pm repeat of The Daily Show.
So I'd turn off the repeat of the Daily Show again, and the
frigging thing would turn the midnight repeat of Olbermann
back on.
And then there's the ***** controls... Sheesh!
The DVR will frequently ignore inputs. Sure, there's like NOW,
with the Star Trek episode, where it responds as if it's
accepting your inputs (showing the pause symbol when I
hit pause, for example), but that's not all.
Frequently you'll hit a button on the remote and nothing will
happen. The piece of ***** Comcast DVR just doesn't accept
it. Making this worse though -- FAR worse -- is that it frequently
freezes.... meaning that it DOES accept whatever you inputted
through the remote, but it's got to wait 30 seconds to a minute
before it responds.
This means, yeah, when you push a button on the remote and
nothing happens, you never know if it's frozen or if you should
hit the button again.
Other gripes:
There's no deleted-items folder, you're dependent on the same
piece of ***** Comcast channel guide (the Tivo guide is FAR
superior) and although Comcast CLAIMS they have boxes
available with the necessary outputs (how else are you going
to burn things to DVD), I have never actually met anyone
who has glimpsed such a box.
Anyway, I know not everybody has a choice, and many people
would love any DVR they can get their hands on, but if you
do have a choice then make the right one: ***** comcast!

We've had a Comcast DVR for about 2 years now and haven't had any problems
until recently. For some reason, the program guide wouldn't come up every
once in a while.
Comcast came this morning and replaced it free of charge. Will Tivo do that?
Just call Comcast and have them replace it. No BFD.

One fine day in alt.atheism, JTEM <jtem01@gmail.com> bloodied us up with
this:
I never had Comcast DVR, but I was with them for internet and cable
service. They were OK, after they worked the bugs out. Then Time Warner
bought them out and everything went to hell in a handbasket. T-W usenet
sucks. Their cable TV was iffy, but the DVR wasn't too bad. I got fed up
with making tech support calls once a week. If you're looking for a good
replacement for Comcast, try AT&T if it's available in your area. It's
good all around, I think. The choice of free movies in the On Demand area
with Time Warner was great, though, AT&T pales in comparison, but that's my
only gripe. Oh, and the DVR works just fine.

I don't know about the new "at&t," but the old AT&T
(which was a completely different company) used to
own the local cable service here, before selling out
to Comcast.
Now I understand that the management at the old
AT&T sold off all the pieces, looted the company
and then sold the name, but my experiences were
bad enough to scare be away from that name.
How so?
Well, this is what I posted after one such experience:

So does anyone have any pull over at RCN?
They *Really* have to start offering service
in my neighborhood....
After a week without any service, AT&T replaced
our modem (it was leased) and all was well. This
lasted exactly one day, and then the NNTP server
died.
I tried calling them. I spent about 10 minutes on
the phone (most of that time on hold & working
through menus) to be told that their system was
down and I'd have to call back.
I called back. The phone rang, and rang, and rang
and rang when, after about eight minutes of continuous
ringing, it rang some more. I hung up.
The third time I called them I actually spoke to a
person. He suggested that I reboot my machine.
How thoughtful.
I explained the issue, again, and how it was unlikely
that a reboot on my end would change anything. But
that was it, his head was full.
The fourth time I called was today. This was an 11
minute phone call in which I was informed that nobody
had reported any problems with usenet. I explained
that I myself had reported a problem last night. He
placed me on hold, came back after a few minutes and
started telling me something, at which point I was
promptly disconnected.
The fifth time I called they informed me that a lot of
people had reported usenet issues, and that they don't
handle it. I was directed to their "help" website and
invited to click on the "chat" link.
So the sixth time I called wasn't actually a phone call,
it was internet chat. I was informed that it would be
24 to 48 hours before the problem with their NNTP server
would be fixed.
Oh joy of joys!
I'm sorry but, this is no accident. Imcompitence at this
scale can only be achieved through great expense & effort.
I mean, any moron can screw up now and then but, to so
thoroughly & consistently ***** up like this takes skill
and planning.
I can't be the only one here old enough to remember when
AT&T used to be thought of as a decent company, could I?
So what happened? Who retired and chose Cowboy Dan as
their successor?
