In a message sent 'round the world, Mark K. Bilbo poured fuel on the
fire with the following:

I wonder if they know nobody'll be able to see it...
There is also quite some irony in that the crescent moon symbol of Islam
has been in the heavens for millions of years already. It is quite
visible, unlike this paltry crucifix.
The people doing this project claim that it could stay aloft for 156
years, but I would have to wonder how long this tooth pick will actually
survive the environment of outer space. It is known that "daytime"
temperatures on the moon can reach 120 deg. Celsius. Add to that the
effects of intense UV from the sun and the electrically charged solar
wind.

Including the Almighty. (Smirk.)
Lessee...90 minute orbit. v = sqrt(G*M/(r+d)). c=2*pi*(r+d).
t=c/v=2*pi*sqrt( (r+d)^3/(G*M) ).
t^2 = 4*pi^2*(r+d)^3/GM.
d = (t^2*G*M/(4*pi^2))^(1/3) - r.
G=6.674215 * 10^-11 N-m^2/kg^2.
M=5.976*10^24 kg.
r=6.378*10^6 m.
t=5400 s.
d=276,000 m. That's about right.
It's a 2" cross or 0.0508 m. Angular deflection 184 nanorads
or 38 milliarcseconds. Rough equivalent: trying to visualize
a 500 nm wavelength light wave (pea-green) across a 9 foot distance.
I'm mildly surprised I could see the space shuttle the one time
it passed over my place -- but then it's a lot bigger, about
122.2 feet or 37.25 m long. It probably was also a bit closer,
though I don't remember which mission.
And then there's the rocket to get it up there. You'd think they'd
simply be able to pray and God will automagically create a
cross visible to all in the sky. (No, the Southern Cross, for
those in the southern hemisphere of the globe, does *not* count.)
Must...not...laugh...must...take...this...effort...seriously...

Right! He made one appear for Emperor Constantine in 312 CE so why
can't he do it again?
