Ken Koehler's column last month regarding Intelligent Design was very
provocative. I wonder why the Intelligent Designer put vestigial leg bones
within the flanks of whales, and put a pelvis in the legless reptiles, snakes?
Why do I, and all other mammals, have nipples? And why did I once have an
appendix, a useless organ which became infected and nearly killed me?
Evolution and genetics can suggest answers, but Creationism/Intelligent Design
needs to explain why "God" would do these things.
Koehler quickly veers off the Intelligent Design scheme to circumvent the
Establishment Clause of the Constitution and starts quoting scripture. He
refers to God creating men's souls in His image. There is not, at present, any
instrument that can detect and measure a soul. I encourage the C/ID proponents
to develop that technology, as it would resolve important ethical questions,
such as whether animals have souls and shouldn't be eaten, and at what point
the soul enters the human embryo.
