Pat Wurtzel wants to see 10 Commandments displayed at Governmental Center

SAGINAW (WJRT) - (12/18/06)--A Saginaw County politician says he has a
solution to the area's problems: the Ten Commandments.
County Commissioner Pat Wurtzel says he'd like to see the commandments on
display in the lobby of the Saginaw County Governmental Center.
The reaction was mixed, and at the center of the issue for those opposed to
the idea is the separation of church and state.
Under Wurtzel's plan, he'd like to see limestone tablets of the Ten
Commandments installed in the lobby of the Governmental Center.
In fact, Wurtzel has offered to pay roughly $10,000 toward the project out
of his own pocket. It is unclear on whether the other county commissioners
would approve such a plan.
But Wurtzel thinks having the commandments on display would be a reminder
to people, and he claims if everyone followed the commandments, the county
and the world's problems would be wiped out.
Monday the reaction was mixed.
"I don't think it's appropriate," said Barbara Katterman of Saginaw.
"I think the Ten Commandments ... you'd put that on the church if you want
to do that. But I think on a state or a public building, it should be
separation of church and state."
"A lot of people want to be politically correct," said Laurie Lisk of
Bridgeport, "but yet they've forgotten that the Ten Commandments is the
basically the basis of a society."
The United States Supreme Court has left the issue open to interpretation.
The commissioners meet for the final time this year Tuesday afternoon.
There is no word on whether this issue will be discussed.
