Object: Computer Whizzes again
Hi, it's me again, still creeping slowly into the modern world. I have
an older computer with Windows 95 and I'm using it to write a novel. I
don't have a printer so a friend of mine in another state is going to
do that for me. Problem is that our systems are not compatible. I just
have WordPad and she has Word 6. I'm wanting a free download of Word 6
that would be compatible with Windows 95 but haven't been able to find
it. I keep searching but all I have found are updates if you already
have it, or converters and patches and other thingys to add to it. Do
any of you know where I can get it?
Thanks in advance,
Miss V

For something more advanced, you could both download OpenOffice. It's
completely free.

she should be able to open wordpad documents in word 6.
But you cannot open all word 6 documents with wordpad! (and you don't
need to).
Send her some stuff you've typed in wordpad, and see if she can print it.
(wordpad that comes with windows 95 has an option to save documents as
"word 6 for windows" format)

No, not all, but you can easily save a document in RTF format using Word
6.0, and Wordpad can open that. So really, it doesn't matter either
way. The two programs are compatible enough that there should be no
problems.

Microsoft Word will open files made in Wordpad. Just save it in RTF
format. I take it you haven't tested it, or you would already know
this.

You are not going to find a (legal) free version of Word 6
anywhere, even if it is compatible with Win95, which I'm not
sure of offhand. Just a suggestion: install Linux on your
machine. It works fine on older machines and you don't even
have to get rid of Winduhs 95 - you can have a dual boot setup.
Every time you boot up the machine, it will ask you whether
you want Windows or Linux. Get hold of Red Hat 7.2 or later,
it is easy to install and it comes with AbiWord or you can
get StarOffice - both of them allow you to create Word-
compatible files.

I don't know how it will run on a win95 machine(assuming it is similarly
aged) but Open Office is a pretty good free bundle.
