Congressional Record falsified! |
Here's a link to the page of the Congressional Record where Rep. Jim
McDermott says the Pledge of Allegiance without the words "under God."
http://tinyurl.com/36m9d
You'll notice that the record has been falsified, as Republican
lawmakers said it would be.
If you have no idea what I am talking about, read the article I've
included below.

"I make my pledge to my country and that's the end of it."
Rep. Jim McDermott (D-WA) on his omission of the words "under God"
when reciting the Pledge of Allegiance for the House of
Representatives on Tuesday, April 27, 2004.

Top Democrat berates McDermott for pledge omission
By Alex Fryer
Seattle Times Washington bureau
WASHINGTON — Forget Republicans. The sharpest rebuke of Rep. Jim
McDermott's omission of the words "under God" in the Pledge of
Allegiance has come from the leader of his own party.
Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-San Francisco, summoned the Seattle
Democrat to her office Wednesday to personally scold him for
improvising when he led the pledge in the House chamber.
Speaking to reporters in the Capitol yesterday, Pelosi, the
highest-ranking Democrat in the House, said: "I asked him to come to
meet with me on that subject, very directly, to express the concern of
colleagues and my own concerns about the presentation of the pledge."
"I completely disagree with Congressman McDermott's presentation of
the pledge to the flag," she said. "House Democrats expect the Pledge
of Allegiance to be delivered as it is written, with the phrase 'under
God,' and with respect."
Democratic and Republican lawmakers take turns reciting the pledge
each day.
McDermott was asked by a Pelosi staff member to recite the words at
Tuesday's session, around 2 p.m., his spokesman Mike DeCesare said.
McDermott said he routinely omits the words "under God" when he says
the pledge, and he didn't say them before the House.
"That's how I've always said it," McDermott said later. "I make my
pledge to my country and that's the end of it."
Republican lawmakers protested and said the Congressional Record would
contain the words "under God."
Pelosi did not say whether McDermott would ever be invited to recite
the pledge again, but she promised he would stick to the exact wording
if he did.
"You will not hear the pledge made on the floor without the words
'under God,' " Pelosi said.

Republicans control the House of Reps. How could they have the power to
falsify the record. If it was falsified then it must have been
falsified by Republicans determined to erase history, or perhaps by
accident by the clerks. But I don't see how democrats could possibly be
blamed for the transcript not recording what was actually said.

I don't know how it all went down, but it was _no_ accident that the
words "under God" ended up in the Congressional Record. The article
that I posted previously stated that Republican lawmakers had
protested and said the Congressional Record would contain the words
"under God." And this is exactly what the Congressional Record says.
It has been confirmed by many sources that Rep. Jim McDermott said, "I
pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to
the Republic for which it stands, one nation _____ ___, indivisible,
with liberty and justice for all." The Congressional Record for that
day states that Rep. Jim McDermott said, "I pledge allegiance to the
Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it
stands, one nation _under_God_, indivisible, with liberty and justice
for all."
Though it was the Republicans that cliamed the Congressional Record
_would_ contain the words "under God," some of the harshest comments
came from Congresswoman Pelosi, a Democrat. There was probably
general agreement -- among both parties -- that the Congressional
Record should contain those words which were never uttered.
So, McDermott is on record saying something he did not say. Is this
legal?

Well, actually I believe that the congressional record can be amended,
at least by vote, but it's not clear who did the amending. Perhaps
repubs did it as part of their self-fulfilling prophecy. I don't see
how democrats could get the record modified, since, as I've pointed out,
they are not the majority party in the House. Maybe this will forever
remain a mystery, like when certain proposed laws come out of
republican dominated committees with modifications the author never put
there and nobody knows who made the changes. I hear it's also not legal
to bribe a person to change his vote with the promise of contributing to
his son's campaign.

Isn't that what the Congressers do when they ask permission to
"revise and extend" the record? Doesn't that mean "go back and put
in a whole lotta stuff I didn't say and make it look like I did"?
I thought they was an agreement several years ago about putting
marks or otherwise noting that portion of the CR that had been
"revised and extended"?
Just asking here

"Legal" is another of those slippery words, like sex, right, wrong, etc. In
fact, just about any word can become slippery if you really work at it. ;)
Or maybe it's one of those "lie, damn lies, and statistics" things.
